Louis the Pious, r. 813-840 c. 825: Extended charters to Jews allowing them to settle within his kingdom, trade, sell and buy slaves. -Charters also protected these Jews from attack and molestation as foreigners or non-Christians. -Charters were not unlimited, but were granted to specific individuals and families.
