How about… • You all need to do some more study because • Everyone in the class can improve the grade I would give them now • The skills you are learning are very important to your study score in English. • No matter the result, pride comes from submitting work that you know is your best work and that shows improvement and growth • Being able to construct a good argument can get you a long way in life, in many situations…
YOU NEED TO HAVE A WELL DEFINED CONTENTION A contention is not: Violence should never be used as a form of public protest OR Sometimes it’s okay to use violence as a form of public protest.
You need to define why… • In the case of the London riots marginalised youth were pushed to a point where they had no choice but to face an uncaring government with force. • OR • No matter how dire the situation we must never allow violence to be a solution to a problem, if we do we are showing we have learnt nothing from human history. • OR • If there was a message sent in the London Riots it was lost because of the barbaric nature of a few
Some of you need to make distinctions so your argument is clear. • Are their different situations when violence is justified? Which relate to your argument? • As self defense? • When your human rights are being violated? • When you feel you don’t have a voice? • When you are marginalisedor discriminated against by those in power?
Examples… • If you are going to try to use an appeal Eg: Sympathy, spend some time on it. • Lead the reader through why they should feel sympathy • Tell someone’s story • Use imagery – Eg: What is it like for someone who lives in these impoverished areas, particularly when there is so much wealth around them • Use inclusive Language – put the reader in their shoes.
‘Expert Opinion’ • If your going to use a quote or expert opinion you have to contextualise it – why should the reader trust this person? Why does their opinion add weight to your argument?
Emotive Language • Who do you want your reader to feel sympathy for? Who is the target of your argument? • You need to think about this and ensure you language matches your intentions. • EG
Vagueness = unconvincing argument • Compare • The riots in London were justified. People there live in poverty. There have been many revolutions that use violence. Malcom X supported the use of violence to fight for the rights of African Americans. People don’t have a voice. • What are these?
What is the difference here? • Historically we have not seen rioting in areas where citizens feel valued, have enough food to eat and contribute positively to society. The destructions in London was not cause by people who are having their needs met. The destruction is caused by people who belong to generations of poverty. The destruction is caused by those who do not have access to the services they require to take care of basic health needs. The destruction is caused by a generation of youth who are a part of an failing education system. Stat on education This is an indication of why they can cause this damage with little remorse. They do not feel connected to the society they are destroying as it is not meeting their needs…
