Aim: What were the achievements of the Shang Dynasty in China?
I. Invasions of China • Although China is isolated, it does have to deal with invasions from nomads (“barbarians”) who live to the north and to the west. • Leads to the rise of strong dynasties (ruling families) that can protect China.
II. Rise of strong Dynasties • Xia Dynasty was the first in China’s history. It was led by a man-god named Yu, who united northern China and drained the land so people could live and grow crops there. • The Shang Dynasty came to power in 1766 B.C. and ruled until 1122 B.C. • Built the first Chinese cities. • Ruled with help from the nobles (people of high rank in the kingdom)
III. Religious Practices of the Shang A. Ancestor Worship → Belief that the spirits of your ancestors live on after death, and could bring either good or bad fortune to the living. What can you do to get good fortune from ancestors? Do we still consider it important to honor our ancestors today? If so, how do we do this?
B. Oracle Bones→ Priests would write questions on animal bones in order to receive advice from the many gods / nature spirits of the religion.
IV. Cultural Achievements of the Shang • Made weapons, chariots and ritual objects out of bronze. • Silk-making for clothing • Symbolic Written Language → Based on pictographs (the symbol resembles the word) and ideographs (the symbol is associated with certain meanings or ideas).
V. The End of the Shang Dynasty A. Large gap between the rich and the poor. Nobles lived in beautiful wooden houses, had bronze weapons and silk clothing. Poor lived in mud huts or caves. Why could this be a problem for China? B. In 1122 B.C., people known as the Zhou invaded the Shang kingdom. They took over China and became the new Zhou Dynasty.
