  1. IOC Tips

  2. Study • 1. Read major speeches of Hamlet, know two or three key scenes well. • 2. Read plot summary of Song of Solomon, reread two or three key scenes from Part 1 and Part 2. Know character names. • 3. Look over literary terms.

  3. During the 20 minute prep time • 1. Annotate EVERYTHING • 2. Be sure to label figures of speech, rhyme scheme, slant rhymes, spondees, repeated words. • 3. Write down your FOCUS, so that you won’t forget to say it. • 4. Use the guiding questions somewhere in your commentary. • 5. Plan your conclusion.

  4. During the commentary: • 1. Use authors’ names whenever possible. • 2. Use literary vocabulary: Instead of “comparison,” use “metaphor.” Be sure explain why the metaphor works or is appropriate. • 3. Refer to poem frequently. Use line numbers.

  5. For the following discussion • Answer questions, but be very specific. The more specific examples you can give for your discussions, the better your score will be. • Note the artist’s craft. For the play, be sure to think about dramatic effects. What does Shakespeare do to create a play that is viewable as well as readable? What does Morrison do as a novelist to reinforce her themes? What are the major themes in each work?

  6. Relax • Enjoy • Be the eloquent, knowledgeable connoisseurs of literature that you are.
