  3. Network and Sharing Center Network and Sharing Center is used to: • Launch networking settings and tasks. • Check your connection status. • View your network visually. • Troubleshoot connection problems. • Get info about network issues in the form • of the Network Map.

What’s New to Windows 7 Network and Sharing Center ? • As compared to Windows Vista, Windows 7 Network and Sharing Center • incorporates following changes: • Home Group • Fewer network adaptor options • Left navigation and Sharing and Discovery options have been moved • Network and Sharing options have been moved to • “Choose homegroup and sharing options” window

Network Locations • About • Profile which contains a collection of network and sharing settings. • Get applied to the network you are connected to. • Very useful to people who are very mobile and connect their computers to many networks • Types • Home Network • Work Network • Public Network • Domain Network

  6. File Sharing Options Three ways to share files:

  7. File Sharing Options – Public Folder Sharing • About • Located in 'C:\Users\Public‘ • A folder accessible to: • All users registered on a computer have access to • All users with an account on that computer. • Computers which are part of the same network

  8. File Sharing Options – Individual Folder Sharing • About • Allows you to gain more control over who can access a particular file or folder • Can be applied using ‘Share with’ menu • ‘Share with’ menu options depend on the file and network type (homegroup, workgroup, or domain)

  9. File Sharing Options – HomeGroup • About • A group of computers that share multimedia files, documents, and printers • Allows you to wirelessly to other computers

  10. Sharing Files in Windows 7 and Windows XP • HomeGroup feature is not compatible with Vista or XP

Troubleshooting APIPA Address Issues Automatic Private IP Addressing: • Ranges between 169.254.0.0 and 169.254.255.25 • Allow computers connected to a LAN without a DHCP server to communicate • Do not allow the computers to connect to non-APIPA computers Reasons of APIPA address issue: • The DHCP server was temporarily unavailable • The computer was not connected to the network properly • The computer was not authorized to connect to the network

Troubleshooting APIPA Address Issues To solve APIPA issues, follow the below methods in sequence until the problem is resolved. • Use Windows Network Diagnostics. • Verify the connectivity to the local network. • Verify that the network hardware is functioning properly. • Attempt to retrieve an IP address from a DHCP server by running the following two commands: • ipconfig /release • ipconfig /renew • Verify if the DHCP server is offline. Bring a DHCP server online and then restart the computer • If the network does not use a DHCP server, configure a static or alternate IPv4 address provided by your network administrator

Troubleshooting Wireless Network Issues Some of the common wireless network problems include the following: Wireless Network Issues WL adapter can’t see WL networks Weak Wireless Signals Can’t reconnect to the WL networks Use device manager to verify WL adapter is detected Check for EMI’s Check WL security settings Check WL adapter has a valid driver Check for channel settings in router Remove WL network profile Check for wireless switch Use the high-gain antenna Connect to the WL network as if it’s a new network. Use repeaters or contact ISP Possible WL network issue Possible solutions

Troubleshooting when you cannot view some websites Possible causes and resolutions are mentioned below: • Cause 1: Browser is attempting to connect through a proxy server • Resolution: Try connecting with the proxy server turned off • Cause 2: Browser connection settings are incorrect • Resolution: Change the connection settings • Cause 3: Router is attempting to proxy DNS requests and failing • Resolution: Refer to the documentation that came with your router for instructions on disabling DNS proxy • Cause 4: Parental Controls, Family Safety, or some other parental control software is blocking access to certain websites • Resolution: Disable the software

Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing Possible causes and resolutions are mentioned below: • Cause 1:No HomeGroup has been joined or created • Resolution: Create or join a HomeGroup • Cause 2:Not using a homegroup, and the folder or printer you're trying to access has not • been shared • Resolution: Use a HomeGroup to share files and printers or turn on file and printer • sharing and set sharing properties on the item • Cause 3: Network Discovery is turned off • Resolution: Turn network discovery on
