CAViDS Lambda Ratio Project

CAViDS Lambda Ratio Project. Background. At 470 HP, over 60% of FAO-16810C losses are gear sliding with honed gears and Rev 7 oil in top gear Lambda Ratio on Drive/OD sets at 470 HP is less than 0.8 Theory says increasing Lambda Ratio to greater than 2 can substantially reduce sliding losses

  1. CAViDS Lambda Ratio Project

  2. Background • At 470 HP, over 60% of FAO-16810C losses are gear sliding with honed gears and Rev 7 oil in top gear • Lambda Ratio on Drive/OD sets at 470 HP is less than 0.8 • Theory says increasing Lambda Ratio to greater than 2 can substantially reduce sliding losses • Increasing oil viscosity increases Lambda Ratio • Is decrease in sliding greater than increase in churning and other no load losses at higher viscosity (Lambda Ratio of 2)? • Eaton and Lubrizol are sponsoring project at CAViDS to explore this question

  3. Mu vs. Lambda Ratio

  4. Objectives • Determine oil viscosity required for Lambda Ratio of 2 for drive/OD sets on FAO-16210C • Determine sliding losses and no load losses at that oil viscosity • Determine net effect compared with standard lube • Decide on whether to pursue confirming testing

  5. Results

  6. End Question • Should we pursue further with confirming testing? • Are there any other issues to be considered?
