Response Rate • The earliest and most recent surveysfor individuals who had completed at least two interviews since their discharge. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.

Needed Services and Supports • In their most recent interview, 47 people (28%) said that they needed services and supports that they weren’t receiving. When asked what else they needed, there were several themes in the responses: • Money • Prefer a different housing arrangement • Different psychiatrist • Additional or different groups and activities • Assistance with transportation • Housing Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.

Housing • Few changes in housing opinions from the first survey to the most recent survey. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.

Money/Income • 60% - Somewhat or very satisfied with the amount of money they have. • 33% - Somewhat or very dissatisfied with their level of income. • Overall percentages were similar from people’s first interview to their most recent interview. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Supports: Transportation • Increase in the number of people who rated their transportation as excellent. • About the same rated transportation as poor. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Supports: Family and Friends • Support from friends increased (64% responded yes). • Family support was similar between the surveys. • 60% receive as much support from their family as they would like • 15% would like additional help connecting with their family. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Supports: Spiritual Activities • The number of people participating in spiritual activities decreased from 44% to 37%. • 26% expressed an interest in finding spiritual activities. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Supports: Drop-in Centers, Clubhouse, Social Rehab, Psych Rehab, and Peer Mentors • 46% report that they go to these programs (an increase). • Peer mentors continue to play a role in people’s lives (59%). • 15% reported wanting a peer. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Physical Health • 85% report receiving regular physical health check-ups, mostly from PCP. • 50% report that there is communication between their physical health and behavioral health providers, 30% don’t know. • 50% report having regular dental care. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Physical and Mental Heath Ratings • Majority of people report their mental health, physical health, and access to physical health care as average or excellent. • Overall, percentages for excellent, average, and poor mental & physical health were consistent between surveys. Other Health Topics • 45% (76 people) did not want help with any of these topics. • 31% (53 people) want help losing weight, and about 23% want help with nutrition, quitting smoking, and/or exercise. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Substance Abuse • Majority report no issues with substance abuse. • 11% (19 people) said they did have substance abuse issues. • 12 of these people report that their use of street drugs or alcohol is having a negative impact on their lives. Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Quality of Life • Increase in percent that feel life is better since leaving Mayview (82% to 87%). • Freedom factor Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Social Life / Independence • 27% rated their social life as poor, an increase from 20%. 69% average or excellent. • 85% of people rated their ability to have fun and relax as excellent or average. • 87% of people rated their level of independence as average or excellent. • 60% rated their ability to take care of themselves as excellent, an increase from 43%. • 53% rated their self-esteem as excellent, an increase from 33%. What would make life better? • When asked what one thing would make their lives better now, several themes emerged: • Finding a significant other • Employment • Finding a home • Getting a car • Having more money • Relationships with family • Stop hearing voices • Dentures, walkers, other health needs • And my two favorite answers: • “Finding out how they make the holes in Swiss cheese.” • “If I married a rich man.” Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
Take-Aways • Work continues to be an area of focus • PH/BH Coordination • Dental • Vision • Communication • Stigma • Advocating for yourself • Use positive deviance approach for PH/BH coordination and understanding substance abuse (those with no issues) • System responsibility to allow/enable people to make the best informed choices for themselves • Teaching people how to inform others in the community to reduce stigma • Focus on making improvements to the entire system • Recovery focus for MH system and workers • Making system flexible and adaptive • Add follow-up question to income question – enough to buy what I need • There was an increase in the # of people who ranked social life as poor Allegheny HealthChoices, Inc.
