  1. WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN!

  2. SCHOOL IS… All about building relationships, establishing trust, creating working literate environments, and getting to know children as readers and learners — and remembering that our classrooms still need to be joyful places…Reading with Meaning, Debbie Miller

  3. COMMUNICATION • Thursday Announcements • DCES Handbook/FCPS Calendar • DCES website and teacher webpages • Find Out First (Deer Tracks will come to you this way) • Teacher’s Voicemail/Email • Monthly Kindergarten Newsletter (on our website)

  4. TRANSPORTATION • Please be sure to verify your child’s transportation home with your child’s teacher at Open House. Please use the green form provided in your child’s placement letter. • Once given the transportation necklace, please be sure your child wears it every day for at least the first two full weeks of school • If there is a change in your child’s transportation, please send in a note with the date of the change, your child’s name, teacher name and the change • If a change occurs after your child has left for school, please notify the office as soon as possible so that your child’s teacher can be notified in a timely manner. Requests must be made prior to 3:00.

  5. Visiting the School • Parents who accompany their child to school will be asked to say goodbye at the kiss and go area located in the front lobby. A staff member will be present to walk your child back to their classroom. • We cannot accommodate parental visits to the classroom in the morning, even on the first day of school, since the teacher is fully engaged with welcoming many new students and their focus must be maintained on the children. • During the school year, if you have an appointment to see your child’s teacher before school, please let the front office know and they will call the classroom to announce your arrival. We love having volunteers at DCES! Every volunteer and chaperone must complete an online training and sign the DCES confidentiality agreement each year. Please watch your FoF for this training to be made available in mid September.

  6. FOOD/EVENTS/BIRTHDAYS • We are a food free school. • No snacks or birthday treats are permitted in the classrooms due to food allergies with the exception of the Halloween and Valentine’s Day parties • Please remember that parties/recess/events are for DCES students only - younger siblings may not attend due to insurance and liability reasons. This includes infants. • You may eat lunch with your child during their lunch time anyday… Our lunch time is 11:40-12:10. We kindly request however that you do not do this until after the first two weeks in order to prevent difficulties with separating from parents. Siblings may attend lunch, but may not attend recess or be in the classrooms. • Absolutely no invitations or thank you cards are permitted to be passed out in school even if the whole class is invited

  7. SCHOOL SAFETY AND SECURITY • Safety Committee to evaluate security plan • Sign in/out process • Exterior doors locked at all times • Drills: fire, lockdown and weather • Accurate information for your child… please update • Dismissal changes by 3pm

  8. MOST IMPORTANT… WE HOPE TO TEACH YOUR CHILD TO LOVE LEARNING!!!
