This report covers the status of missions and instruments delivery schedules, development progress, funding allocations, and time spent on PDS-wide activities. It outlines concerns, such as delays in archiving, mixed progress in development, and the need for tools and training to ensure consistent archiving standards across nodes.

Geosciences Node Report R. Arvidson, E. Guinness, S. Slavney, T. Stein PDS Management Council, August 30, 2018
Deliveries to Geosciences Archives • Missions and Instruments Delivering Behind Schedule • MRO SHARAD/ASI • EDRs – Regular deliveries are now occurring, although they often arrive late. Backlog has been eliminated. • RDRs – Backlog of missed deliveries between Dec. 2012 and Dec. 2017 has not been addressed; no schedule. • Mars Express • Delivery schedule is ill-defined. • ASPERA, HRSC, MARSIS, and OMEGA are up-to-date. MaRS, PFS, MARSIS AIS, and SPICAM have not delivered in over a year. • Missions and Instruments Delivering On Schedule • Odyssey GRS, Radio Science • MER APXS, RAT, Radio Science, Rover Motion Counter, MI, Pancam, Navcam • MSL APXS, ChemCam, CheMin, DAN, SAM • MRO CRISM, Radio Science/Gravity, SHARAD/U.S. • LRO LOLA, LEND, Diviner, Mini-RF PDS Management Council
Development of Geosciences Archives • Missions and Instruments Development Behind Schedule • InSight Instrument Deployment Arm (IDA) • Not yet clear whether raw and derived data and documentation will be archived. • The cognizant engineer is not involved in archiving; new archive representative is unfamiliar with PDS. • Mars 2020 Returned Sample Science (RSS) • ICD not yet in place. • Missions and Instruments Development On Schedule • InSight HP3/RAD, RISE, SEIS • Europa Orbiter MISE, REASON • Mars 2020 SuperCam, PIXL, SHERLOC, RIMFAX • CubeSats • Progress mixed, depending on project PDS Management Council
Funding • Percentage of Year 3 Received: 100% • Approximate Percentage Not Yet Allocated: 11% • Concerns: None. PDS Management Council
Time Spent on PDS-wide Activities* PDS Management Council
Individual Data Providers PDS Management Council
Individual Data Providers • Issues: • Lots of hand-holding (i.e., training) • Despite node initiatives, little or no response from some providers until near the end of their funding, resulting in large last-minute effort by node personnel • Data Management Plans: We provide advice as requested. We refer them to the DMP FAQ online and the PDS Proposer’s Archive Guide. • Percentage of node time: 30% summed over personnel time. • Changes to ROSES language: Clarify “PDS-equivalent archive” to include requirements for peer review and documentation. PDS Management Council
Near-term Concerns • Lots of individual data providers with little PDS experience leads to many time-intensive interfaces. • Need tools, documentation, and training to enable consistent and streamlined archiving with PDS4 standards. • How to ensure consistent PDS4 implementation across nodes? • For example, use lessons learned from MESSENGER migration.
