Introduction to STAR Events www.fcclainc.org • STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. STAR Events offer individual skill development and application of learning through the following activities— • Cooperative—teams work to accomplish specific goals • Individualized—members work alone to accomplish specific goals • Competitive—individual or team performance measured by an established set of criteria.

  3. Introduction to STAR Events www.fcclainc.org Why STAR Events? STAR Events promote the FCCLA Mission to focus on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader. Each event is designed to help members develop specific lifetime skills in character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.

  5. Introduction to STAR Events www.fcclainc.org Evaluating Your Project The STAR Events rubrics are a great way to make sure that your project is up to the highest standards. Use the rubric as you prepare your portfolio and speech to make sure you are ready to compete! -Use the order of the Rubric when designing presentation and presentation materials -Use the terms in the Rubric -Have practice judges use the rubric to score your practice presentations

  6. Advocacy • An individual or team event, recognizes participants who demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and ability to actively identify a local, state, national, or global concern, research the topic, identify a target audience and potential partnerships, form an action plan, and advocate for the issue in an effort to positively affect a policy or law.

  7. Career Investigation • An individual event - recognizes participants for their ability to perform self-assessments, research and explore a career, set career goals, create a plan for achieving goals, and describe the relationship of Family and Consumer Sciences coursework to the selected career. • Categories: Junior, Senior

  8. Chapter Service Project • A team event - recognizes chapters that develop and implement an in-depth service project that makes a worthwhile contribution to families, schools, and communities. Students must use Family and Consumer Sciences content and skills to address and take action on a community need.

  9. Chapter in Review • A team event - recognizes chapters that develop and implement a well-balanced program of work and promote FCCLA and Family and Consumer Sciences and/or related occupations and skills to the community.

  10. Entrepreneurship • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who develop a plan for a small business using Family and Consumer Sciences skills and sound business practices. The business must relate to an area of Family and Consumer Sciences education or related occupations.

  11. Environmental Ambassador • An individual or team event - recognizes participants that address environmental issues that adversely impact human health and well-being and who actively empower others to get involved.

  12. Focus on Children • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who use Family and Consumer Sciences skills to plan and conduct a child development project that has a positive impact on children and the community.

  13. Food Innovations • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of food product development by creating an original prototype formula, testing the product through focus groups, and developing a marketing strategy.

  14. Illustrated Talk • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who make an oral presentation about issues concerning Family and Consumer Sciences and/or related occupations. Participants use visuals to illustrate content of the presentation.

  15. Interpersonal Communications • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who use Family and Consumer Sciences and/or related occupations skills and apply communication techniques to develop a project designed to strengthen communication.

  16. Life Event Planning • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who apply skills learned in Family and Consumer Sciences courses to manage the costs of an event.

  17. National Programs in Action • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who explain how the FCCLA Planning Process was used to implement a national program project.

  18. Nutrition & Wellness • An individual event, recognizes participants who track food intake and physical activity for themselves, their family, or a community group and determine goals and strategies for improving their overall health.

  19. Parliamentary Procedure • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who use communications skills and techniques to educate their schools and communities about FCCLA with the intention of growing chapters and strengthening FACS and FCCLA programs.

  20. Promote and Publicize FCCLA! • An individual or team event - recognizes participants who use communications skills and techniques to educate their schools and communities about FCCLA with the intention of growing chapters and strengthening FACS and FCCLA programs.

  21. Recycle & Redesign • An individual event - recognizes participants who select a used fashion or home apparel item to recycle into a new product.

  22. Sports Nutrition • An individual or team event, recognizes participants who use Family and Consumer Sciences skills to plan and develop an individualized nutritional plan to meet the needs of a competitive student athletic in a specific sport.

  23. Teach and Train • An individual event - recognizes participants for their exploration of the education and training fields through research and hands-on experience.

  24. ONLINE STAR Events www.fcclainc.org • These events have two participation levels. In Level I, participants submit their online, digital project for evaluation. In Level II, the twenty (20) highest scoring entries are invited to present their digital project, plus an oral presentation, at the National Leadership Conference. • Online STAR Events • FCCLA Chapter Website • Digital Stories for Change • Virtual Poster • National Outreach Project
