A little boy once returned home from Hebrew school and his father asked, "what did you learn today?" He answered, "The Rabbi told us how Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt." "How?" the dad asked. Today’s Joke
The boy said "Moses was a big strong man and he beat Pharoah up. Then while he was down, he got all the people together and ran towards the sea. When he got there, he had a Corps of Engineers build a huge pontoon bridge. Once they got on the other side, they blew up the bridge while the Egyptians were trying to cross." The father was shocked. "Is that what the Rabbi taught you?" Today’s Joke
The boy replied, "No. But you'd never believe the story he DID tell us!" Today’s Joke
PASSOVER 2011 By Rabbi Stanley
Welcome to Pasach (Passover) 2011! This is a festive time for Jews all over the world. Indeed the Book of Exodus calls Passover a “Feast”
So it’s a time of merriment and feasting although there are some serious parts of the service and you’ll see that as we go through.
So, a few things I’d like you to notice before we begin. • In front of each of you is a Passover Haggadah. Try and say that? “Haggadah”. • Every Pasach (Passover in Hebrew) Jews read from a Haggadah, it’s basically an order of service. • It tells us what to do and when to do it.
There’s literally thousands of various Haggadahs out there and many are a little different. • But they all have certain elements that are the same. • So as long as they have those elements, then they’re kosher for Passover use.
Passover is done once a year. However I’ve done hundreds of these Seders (Services). • How could that be? I’m not hundreds of years old.
Well, my parents were missionaries to Israel I lived there for 19 years. • Every year since I was 6 years old we’d come back to either the States or Europe and go from Church to Church demonstrating what a Passover is.
So sometimes we’d end up doing 20 or so of these in a year. • It’s a lot of fun and people really enjoy them.
Now there’s lots of different organizations out there that demonstrate Passovers but what’s different about ours is we do it the way it’s done in Israel.
You also have a few other • items in front of you and as we • go through the Seder (Service) • we’ll be explaining them to • you. • Try not to eat anything • before it’s time, especially the • white stuff on your plate.
One other thing I want to show you before we start is the Passover Plate. • We have one here at the head table. Usually every Jewish family has one that looks something like this. • They can look a little different though. • Different styles etc.
After the service, feel free to come up and look at the Judaica (Jewish items) we have up here.
Also it’s traditional for some to wear white clothing. That’s why you see my wife and I dressed in white. Samaritan celebrating Passover
This serves to remind us of the white garments that the Kohen HaGadol would wear when he entered the Holy of Holies while serving in the Bet haMikdash.
Passover Seders can be done at home with family and close friends. • Or It can be done like this with a congregation.
There will be times during this Seder that all the men here will say some things in unison • And there will be times that the women will all say things in unison. • It will all be up here on the screen.
After we do the actual Passover Seder I’ll then explain how some of these things relate to the New Testament and the “Last Supper”. • All this information will also be posted on our website at www.aveinu.com
If you’d like to learn more feel free to join us on Saturday mornings at 10am here in this building in room 103

The women will recite, in unison, the translation of the prayer in English. Women: Blessed art thou oh L-rd our G-d King of the universe, who has sanctified us through His commandments and has allowed us to kindle the Seder candles.
Kaw-desh The Leader of the Passover Seder recites the prayer of sanctificationLeader:Baw-rook Aw-taw Aw-doe-nye El-o-hay-new,Meh-lek Ha-oh-lawm,Aw-sher B’-har-baw-new Me-kole-awm.Baw-ruke Aw-tah Aw-doe-nyeMe-kaw-desh Yees-raw-aleV’-hawtz-mah-neem.

The leader of the table now pours the first cup. Before each of the four cups we will say the blessing for the wine. The first cup is called: “The Cup of Blessing”: Please pour the wine (grape juice) Please raise your cup with your right hand…
Leader: • Baw-rook Aw-tah Aw-doe-nye El-oh-hay- • new, Meh-lek Haw-oh-lawm, Bo-ray P’-ree • Haw-gaw-fen.
The men will recite, in unison, the translation of the prayer in English Leader & Men: Blessed art Thou oh Lord our GOD King of the universe, creator of the fruit of the vine. As we drink, we all lean to the left… Let us partake together.
Ur-hawtz First washing of the hands. Dip your fingers into the finger bowl and dry with the towel.
Kar-paws On your plate is a sprig of parsley to represent the hyssop. The hyssop was used to sprinkle the blood of the Passover lamb on our door posts so the L-RD would spare our firstborn. There is also a glass of salt water which represents the tears our forefathers shed as slaves in the land of Egypt.
The leader recites the blessing for the fruit of the earth. Leader: Ba-ruke aw-tah aw-doe-nye El-oh-hay-new Meh Lek Ha-oh-lawm, Bo-ray P’-ree Ha-ah-daw-mah
The men recite, in unison, the translation of the prayer • in English • Leader & Men: • Blessed art Thou oh L-RD our G-D, King of the universe, • creator of the fruit of the earth. Dip the parsley in the saltwater and partake together
Yaw-hawtz (The Leader, at the head table, will hold up the shank-bone of a lamb and the matzah tosh with three matzos in it.) This is matzah (hold up matzah) and this is a matzah tosh (hold up matzah tosh). A matzah tosh has 3 compartments.
It is the custom to break the middle matzah in two parts, the smaller part is returned to the plate and the larger piece (called the afikomen) is wrapped with three layers of linen cloth. Then the leader of the Seder hides it.
After the meal the youngest member at the • table will search for the afikomen. • He will bring it back to the table and receive a • reward (depending on how young they are). • The two parts will be matched together and it • will be a sign. “That which is broken off will not • remain lost to our people.”
The Leader will now hold up the matzah tosh with the matzos in it. Everyone will now say in unison…… This is the bread of affliction that we and our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungered, come and eat. Whosoever is in need, come and celebrate the Passover. Now here, next year in the land of Israel.
Mah Neesh-tah-nah? • The Four Questions • Leader: • Even the youngest notices this flat bread used in • the Seder, the matzah. It is unleavened bread. • Now let the youngest lead in asking the first of • the four questions.
Lady leader: Because the L-RD commanded us to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, forever.
On all other nights we eat all kinds of herbs. Why on this night do we eat only bitter herbs?
