Objectives • Perform an actual demonstration of an agricultural skill • Use effective public speaking methods • Show cooperation with team members • Demonstrate proper communication members
So What Is It? Agricultural skill demonstration, or ag skills, is a Leadership Development Event. • LDEs are the fall speaking events. • This LDE is one where you demonstrate a skill commonly (or not so commonly) used in agriculture, and clearly communicate what you are doing. • Team is made of 3-5 members.
So a Step by step how to..? • Ag Skills is essentially a step by step, how to event. • Think about a how-to video. A good one will go in depth, a bad one will barely explain. • I would show a video, but it’s against the rules to video this contest.
Personal Examples – What skills can we do? • I was an active member in our FFA, and while I didn’t do ag skills, I helped the participants from the communication aspect • One of my favorite scripts they did was cleaning and charging a battery. • Communication is key. Everyone on the team has to speak at some point. Not just one person. • Points made need to be clear and concise.
What does the teacher need to know to coach this? • To coach this event, the main thing that ag educators need to know is the Agriculture Science and Technology Curriculum. This is where your scripts come from. • As a teacher, you need to have a team that’s not only comfortable with each other, but comfortable demonstrating and communicating the skill to whoever they’re presenting to. • Again, Communication is key.
Additional information • LDEs are a fall event, with many invitational contests to better the individuals competing. • After invitational contests, it’s time for District Contest. • Top 2 teams at district advance to area. • Top 2 teams at area advance to State. • Only one team at State advances to Nationals which is held at National Convention.
