  1. Surrey Park Swim ClubAGE GROUP TO OPEN – A WHOLISTIC APPROACHHow do we get there?

  2. 3 Important questions for all swimming families: What are your Goals in swimming? What do you have to do to reach your Full potential? As Parents, are you committed to help your child?

  3. 12 & Under Swimming! • Skill / Learning development • Teach them correct basic skills – then teach them how to train • Talent Identification • Internally owned competition / club! • Government report into Junior Sport in the late 90’s • Social interaction • Friendship, camaraderie and team work • Social Justice • Everyone’s equal • Process over outcome • Personal Best Vs Gold medal!

General Changes to Junior / State Development Squads: • Increase of training distances from 25 mt to 50-75-100 mt • Introduction of Drill Progressions – Junior to Open squads! • Introduction of “Challenge” Sets: • 500 Swim Time Trial • 200 Kick Time Trial • Stretching session once a week on a rotational basis • 60% of squad members averaging 2 sessions per week • See the Training Continuum • 6 sessions per week on offer • All Junior swimmers encouraged to attend Surrey Park Long Course swim meet coming up on 1st Nov! • Introduction of “Term Report Cards” • Coach meetings / question time: • Before 4.20pm or via email for an appointment • Try to refrain from talking to coaches while the session is being conducted

Age Group Swimmers – 12-16 years! • We want our swimmers to keep coming back after being in the program for more than a decade - How? • It’s Fun, Fun, Fun - Enjoyable! • No pressure to compete externally when they are young • Promote friendship / camaraderie • It’s not just about swimming • Great facilities

  6. Age Group to Open! • Identify and educate swimmers • Engineer your group dynamics • Develop Team Culture with your swimmers – Use a Sport Psych • Get your swimmers to learn about “Buy In”

Age Group Swimmers - 12-16 years • Retention comes from constant challenge to the swimmers • Minimum / maximum theory • High emphasis on Cross-training to make training enjoyable! • Boxing-Bike-Skip • Core strength program • Circuit • Running / Mud Runs • Games – Dodge Ball • Relays etc… • Overnight camps • Swim-A-Thon

Age Group to Open Continuum! • Session and commitment progression – • 10 and under – 3 to 4 sessions per week Stretching • 11 years – 4 sessions per week Core Strength • 12 years – 5 to 6 sessions per week 1 gym 1 Box/Skip / 1 run • 13 years – 6 to 7 sessions per week 1 gym 1 Box/Skip / 1 run • 14 years – 7 to 8 sessions per week 2 gym 1 Box/Bike/Skip • 15 years – 8 to 9 sessions per week 2 gym 2 Box/Bike/Skip • 16 and over – 9 sessions per week 2-3 gym 2 Box/Bike/Skip

Senior Swimmers – 17 years + • Make things new and exciting: • Deal a new CARD for each new preparation – Introduction of Nutritionist etc… • Find New ways to do Old things – Richard Charlesworth • Bike – Boxing – Skipping / A2-AT • Introduce TRAINING CAMPS • Locally • State • Nationally • Internationally • Include competition - Townsville 2008 - Cairns 2009 - Singapore 2010 - USA 2011-213 - Phuket 2014

Senior swimmers – 17 years+! • Rest + Recovery • Ensure longevity • 3 Day break after BHP Meet • 3 Day break after NSW Open State Champ • 10 Day Break after Trials • 5 Day break after Phuket • 5 Day break after Com Games Glasgow • 5 Day break after Pan Pacific champs • 14 Day break after Singapore $ Meet • 5 Day break after S/C Nationals • 12 Day break after QLD State Champ • 8+ Weeks off! • Change the group Dynamics? • Boys + Girls • Young Vs Old • Short/Middle/Long Sprint • Senior Camp / Comp Team

Senior Swimmers – 17years + • Transfer of Trust: • Belief in your swimmers intentions • Include them in planning phase • Have regular feedback sessions • Pre-During-Post season • Remind swimmer of Team Code / Conduct • Educate Parents into “Your Plan” • Matt Burgin / Jon Hart approach • Roles of Swimmer-Parent-Coach

  12. Senior Swimmers – 17 years+ • Understand the physiological and Psychological changes: Child Vs Adult • Recovery time • Taper – Better to be Over rested than Under rested • Specification • Study/University/Work • Relationships • Peer group pressures

  13. Summary – Age to Open! • We need to change and grow with them on this journey! • It’s not about YOU, • It’s not about ME, • It’s about US!
