Jobs and wages • The Basics • House Surgeon =PGY1/PGY2 = F1/F1 • Few Specialties with an SHO role (O&G, Anaesthetics, ED) • Reg = post-PGY2 for 5 years • Wages • Banded. • Inpatient hospital medicine/surgery usually C • NZD 86,829 = £41,135 • Reliever usually A • NZD 110,201 = £52,208 • Additional NZD 5,000+ if on and non-urban pay scale (rural hospitals) • Hospital Life • Similar to UK but better resourced, there are still busy on-calls and quiet on-calls. • Partially private insurance and accident cover (ACC), partially public – little difference to day to day • Hospital pay for registration and some courses. • Need MCNZ registration to get a visa.

How do I get there? • Contact hospitals and ask about vacancies for each DHB (District Health Board) contact their RMO (Resident Medical Officer) units. • Look for research opportunities/service jobs • It’s not nationalised applications so it’s all about getting your foot in the door however you can. • Visa • Can do working holiday or essential skills. • Apply for MCNZ quickly as may slow up your visa. • North West Thames have an exchange for 3 FY2s run by Philippa Shallard (Imperial)
