YES StudentApplications • Wheredoourstudentscomefrom? • Therearemultipleroundstothe YES applicationand selectionprocess. • AllapplicantsarerequiredtotakeanEnglishproficiency exam,write aproctoredessay,complete aYES program application,andparticipateingroupandindividualin- personinterviews. • Allfinalistsareselectedonthe basisof merit. • Applicants mustbe betweenthe agesof 15-18bythe start ofprogram (some countries havea cut off of17)

StudentswithDisabilities,cont. AnIntrotoMobilityInternational USA MobilityInternationalUSA(MIUSA)is theorganizationbasedinEugene,ORholding agrantfromtheDepartment ofStatethathelps tosupportYESstudentswithdisabilitieswhiletheyareonprogram. MIUSA provides resourcesto students,theirhostfamiliesandstaffand volunteers whichhelps us alltobettersupportthestudents. Theyconductaninitialassessmentofeach student,usuallyinpersonbut sometimes overthephone.AssessmentsaresharedwithAFS-USAandprovide greatideas forpossibleresourcesandopportunitiesinthestudentslocalarea. Studentswithdisabilitiesarerequiredtoattend1 workshopconductedbyMIUSAinEugene,OR. ForYESstudentsthereisaFallPreparatoryWorkshop. Please makesureall hostfamiliesandvolunteers hostingstudentswithdisabilitiesintheirareasare awareofthis requirement.

SP SupportConsiderations Pets:Studentsaretoldthattheyshouldexpecttolive withpets,unlesstheyhaveanallergy. Weaskthatstudentscankeeptheirroompet-freeiftheyprefer. Halalfood:Studentsaretoldtonotexpectaccessto halalfood,andthattheyshouldpreparetobe vegetarianifneeded. Mosque access:Studentsaretoldthatthey shouldpreparetonothaveaccesstoamosque. Makeuse ofhostfamily questionnaire!
So,whatisaCluster? • Aclusterisagroupof threeormoreSponsoredProgramsstudentsin anareateamwhoaresupportedbyadesignatedvolunteer(s),theClusterCoordinator(s).Studentsarelocated within120milesof theClusterCoordinator. • AClusterCoordinatorisavolunteer whooverseestheprogram activities,knownasenrichmentactivities, forSponsored Programs studentswithinanareateam. • Allof our sponsoredprogramsstudentsarecalledupontocompletea seriesofenrichmentactivitiesasarequirementof theprograms.These activities aremeant toprovidestudentswithfirst-handinsightintoAmericanpoliticalandsocialinfrastructure,our culturalheritage andvalues, aswellastheconcept of “civilsociety”.
What are Enrichment Activities and why do they matter? • Whileenrichmentactivitiesshouldbefun,they shouldalsohaveeducationalcontent.Activities shouldengagestudentsindifferentaspectsof Americanculture • For example:Atriptoseea concert orplay mightbeacceptableifitincludesa discussion ofhow theseproductionsare organizedanda discussionof the fundingof the production, whetherfor-profitor not-for-profit.
Enrichment Activities, cont. • Therequirements: • Year-longYES andFLEXstudentsarerequiredtocompleteaminimumof 6enrichmentactivities.Semester YESMalaysians andCBYX participantsarerequiredtocompleteaminimumof 3 activities. • Eachstudentmustcomplete atleast oneactivityfromeachof the followingcategories: • Government(ex. Triptostatecapitalandhave studentsmeetwitharepresentative; hold discussionaboutdifferencesingov. betweenthecountriesfromwhichstudentscome) • CulturalDiversity/NativePeoples(ex. Visitto local church,temple, or mosque and meetwithacommunityleadertohave atalk aboutreligioustraditionsandbeliefs) • CommunityService/Volunteerism(ex.Volunteer atlocal food pantry,havemanager talkwithstudentsaboutthecommunity’sneeds) • Enrichmentactivitiesthatdonothave articulatededucationalcontent cannotbereimbursedthroughtheU.S.Departmentof Statefunding.
EnrichmentActivity Funds • $400foreachyear-longYESandFLEXstudent • $200forYESsemesterstudentsfrom Malaysia • $150foreach CBYXstudent Forexample:Aclusterwith2year-longYESstudents,1FLEXstudent,1 CBYXand1semesterYESstudent wouldreceive $1550tocoverthecostofenrichment activitiesfortheyear.
StudentStipends • AllFLEXandYESstudentsreceiveamonthly stipendof$125 • CBYXstudentsdonotreceiveastipend • Themonthlystipendisapersonalallowancethat studentsmayusetocoverexpensesrelatedto socializingwithAmerican friendsandtopay for personalitemssuch as toiletries,movie tickets/excursionswithfriends,phoneuse,gifts, etc. • Thestipendis notintendedfor electronics, schoolorweatherspecificclothing,schoollunchesor tobesenthome.
