Energy Efficient Dye Sensitized Solar Cell and its Business Perspective in the Society Dr. Jamal Uddin Coppin State University Baltimore, MD.
The Problem • We need to constantly charge our electronic mobile devices • Portable chargers are great, except when you forget to charge them • Solar charging is better, but: • Expensive • Can be environmentally unfriendly • Bulky
The Solution • Alternative source of electricity for charging portable devices such as laptops, cell phones and tablets. Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are 3rd generation solar cells that use dyes to absorb visible light for the production of electricity Flexible thin film DSSC to be incorporated into backpacks and other bags that carry devices that need to be charged frequently. • Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) will be incorporated into backpacks and other bags that carry devices that need to be charged frequently.
Mechanism of DSSC • Dye (S) is excited with visible light (hν) • Excited dye (S* ) inject electron (e− ) into conduction band of TiO2 and is oxidized • Oxidized dye (S+) accept (e- ) from electrolyte • Injected electrons transported btn TiO2 and extracted to a load where work done is delivered as an electrical energy • The I3− substitutes the internally donated electron with that from eternal load and is reduced back to 3 I− S + hν → S∗ S∗ → S+ + e− (TiO2) S+ + e− → S I3− + 2 e− → 3 I− • Ghann, W., Sobhi, H., Kang, H., Chavez-Gil, T., Nesbitt, F. and Uddin, J. Journal of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering 2017, 5, 46-66.
UNIQUENESS OF PRODUCT • DSSC fabricated with natural dye • Different colors of DSSC which could be matched to color of backpack DSSC • Thin flexible • solar cells The unique fabrication process leading to highly efficient DSSC @low cost
PARTNERSHIP • TREASON TOTING COMPANY – A successful local company that manufacture and sell bags that carry products such as the scissors, phones, tape measure, thread, needle, laptop, and notebooks that we use every day. • We hope to partner with Herschel, another bag manufacturing company based in New York, in order to increase our presence and market area. They sell upwards of 4.5 million bags/year. • Total revenue from backpacks and courier bags for 2017 was ~ $150 M
Initial Market • Our ideal starting customers are students • Our initial market will be Coppin students (3,000 students) and subsequently students in Maryland (371,000 students) • Promotion via social media, students fairs and conferences • Distribution via University Bookshops
Competition Cost of bag $39.99 • Portable silicon cell solar chargers are an indirect competitor. • Other competitors are existing solar bags. Plus cost of DSSC $10.00 Cost of Solar bag $49.99 • Our device uses natural materials, is less expensive, and is more attractive • Added corporate advantage because of new tariffs on non- U.S. solar products
Startup Needs • Two advisors to volunteer until company is making a profit. • 2 actively involved students to • receive stipend of $7200/yr. ea. • for PT work. • More workers when funding • for our project is obtained. • Dr. Ghann will manage the start-up • and coordination with Treason toting • company.
Equipment Required • Team will require material and • equipment needed to produce DSSC. • Solar simulators, conductive electrodes, • multimeters, and quantum efficiency • instruments and chemicals. • The group already has some of these instruments, which are currently being utilized for the production of the prototypes.
Seeking a grant from the • CSU Foundation to finance • operation in the 1ST year. • Applying to grants from • TEDCO and other agencies • that sponsor startup companies. Startup Needs – Cont’d In Year 3, we expect to have investment from individuals and companies, which will help drive up production.
sUMMARY • Need to constantly charge electronic mobile devices • Current chargers either expensive or inefficient. • Goal: fabricate ecofriendly, efficient and inexpensive DSSC for backpacks • Partnering with Treason Toting and Herschel bag manufacturing companies • Silicon cell solar chargers are competitor but ours natural, expensive and attractive. • New tariffs on non- U.S. solar products will be comparative advantage • Great team of students and faculty • Seeking grant from the CSU Foundation & other agencies
