  1. Find out friday

  2. Do men have Free Will? • Well . . .

  3. Do men have Free Will? • Really . . . • NO • Let’s define it: • Being able to do whatever you want to do whenever you want to do it- that’s a free will • Libertarian Will? . . Who has it? • God

  4. Some Specifics • Free? • Romans 6:12-20 • 2 Peter 2:17-19 • John 8:31-36 • The real issue: free for salvation • Rom. 10:12-13; Matt 23:37; John 3:16 • John 1:12-13; Rom. 9:16; Eph. 1:4-5, 2:1-10 • Better Categories: Divine Sovereignty and Human Responsibility • Either a slave to Sin or to Righteousness • See also Matt. 11:28-30 • This is usually the “free” most are talking about • The “whosoever” focus • God is absolutely in control and unsaved man is dead • God is in control, yet we are accountable • See also Romans 9:19-24

  5. Could Christ have sinned? • Called Impeccability Debate • Impeccability – Christ could not have sinned • Peccability – Christ could have sinned • Texts: • Heb 4:14-16 • 2 Cor. 5:21 • 1 Peter 1:19 • 1 Peter 2:21-25 (Isaiah 53:9) • 1 John 3:5 • Foci • Jesus tempted as we • No sin • Spotless – no sin • No sin, no worldly conformity • Took our sins, but remained sinless

  6. Right?

  7. Some more issues • James 1:13 • 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. • The argument is that if Christ was unable to sin, then the temptation was not as genuine as it is with us. • Shedd says . . . • If Jesus is God, does this mean that He could not have been tempted? • Was it an empty sympathy?

  8. “A person who cannot sin, it is said cannot be tempted to sin. This is not correct any more than it is correct to say that because an army cannot be conquered, it cannot be attacked. Temptability depends on the constitutional susceptibility, while impeccability depends on the will.”

  9. Let’s go back to James 1 • James 1:12-16(+17&18) • 12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. • 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. • 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. • 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. • 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

  10. Let’s go back to James 1 • James 1:12-18 • 12 Μακάριος ἀνὴρ ὃς ὑπομένει πειρασμόν, ὅτι δόκιμος γενόμενος λήμψεται τὸν στέφανον τῆς ζωῆς ὃν ἐπηγγείλατο τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν.

  11. “Trial” and “Tempt” = same word The difference is what you do with it

  12. The point He Didn’t Sin

  13. What about Baptism • Texts: • Matt. 3:1-17 • Matt. 28:19-20 • Acts 8:36-38 • 1 Peter 3:18-22 • Romans 6:1-11, Gal 3:26-29 • Acts 2:37-42 • Acts 10 • Acts 16:14-15, 30-34

  14. What about Baptism • Topics: • Does Baptism save you? • No, Jesus does • What about Pedobaptism • It is a covenant if biblical • There is a question of the authority of the Church* • Born out of continuity and likened unto the sign of circumcision • Focuses on Acts passages, tradition and theological girth • What about Credobaptism • Meaning of baptizo is to immerse • If outward sign of “all who believe” then must be after belief salvation

  15. So . . . It is a sign . . . No more, no less. The point is to Whom it points.

  16. The Will of God

  17. The Will of God • Psalm 37:4 • 4 Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.

  18. A Macarthurian walk • God’s will is that you are: • Saved (2 Peter 3:9-10) • Spirit filled (Eph. 5:16-18) • Sanctified (1 Thess. 4:3-7) • Suffering (1 Peter 4:19) • *Satisfied (Phil. 4:4) • Then . . . • Do what you want
