  2. Content: • What is democracy? • How and when was born the democracy? • How many types of Democracy are there ? • Democracy in Bulgaria- interesting facts.

  3. Democracy • The word democracy is derived from the Greek word : demos – people ; kratos – power or rule • Democracy refers to a political system in which government is form by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representative. Main Points: people elected government. There is freedom of speech. There is no one party government in the country. Right to give vote to elect their representatives. The common people, considered as the primary source of political power. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.

  4. Principles of democracy • Free elections are used to select representatives of people.

  5. The powers of government are based on the consent of the governed.

  6. Public questions are decided by the will of the majority.

  7. Rule of low guarantees rights and freedoms.

  8. Freedom to live or travel anywhere in the country. • Freedom to work at any job for which one qualifies. • Freedom to marry and raise a family. • Freedom to receive free education in public schools. • Freedom to join a political party, union, or other legal group.

  9. How and whenwas born the democracy? • The earliest democracy in the world began in Athens, in 510BC , in Athens they let all the free adult men who were citizens vote, rich or poor. That was great for poor men – as long as they weren`t slaves – but bad for women , who were pretty much shut out of the political power they had had in the Archaic period. When democracy turned out to work in Athens, many other city – states chose it for their government too. But most of them allowed even fewer people to vote than Athens did: most of the other city – states only allowed free adult male citizens to vote if they owned land or owned their own houses. They didn`t let women vote either.

  10. How many types of Democracy are there? • Direct Democracy – Head of State is any member of government in turn( for one year), no practical importance. For example: Switzerland. • Presidential Democracy – The President is head of state and leader of the government. For example: USA, France. • Parliamentary Democracy – Head of State is a different function than prime minister, it may be a monarch or an elected person. For example: UK, Germany, Spain, Italy.

  11. Democracy in Bulgaria • After 1989, after forty-five years of single party system, Bulgaria had an unstable party system, dominated by democratic parties and opposition to socialists - the Union of Democratic Forces and several personalistic parties and the post-communist Bulgarian Socialist Party or its creatures, which emerged for a short period of time in the past decade, personalistic parties could be seen as the governing Simeon II's NDSV party and Boyko Borisov's GERB party. Today, the president is Rumen Radev.

  12. Democracy in Bulgaria • Bulgaria has generally good freedom of speech and human rights records as reported by the US Library of Congress Federal Research Division in 2006, while Freedom House listed it as "free" in 2011, giving it scores of 2 for political rights and 2 for civil liberties. However, in 2014, there is some concern that the proposed new Penal Code would limit freedom of the press and assembly, and as a consequence freedom of speech. The Economist Intelligence Unit has rated Bulgaria as "flawed democracy" in 2016.

  13. Democracy in Bulgaria • In 1992 Zhelev won Bulgaria's first presidential elections and served as President until 1997. • The second President was another member of the Union of Democratic Forces - PetarStoyanov, who served until 2002. In 2001 leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party - GeorgiParvanov defeated Stoyanov and took office in 2002 and served until 2012; becoming the only president to be reelected after his successful 2006 campaign. In 2011 GERB candidate Rosen Plevneliev was elected to serve as President from 2012 until January, 2017.
