  1. Environmental Products of Biotechnology By: Katie and Mike 7th Period

  2. Enviro-Pig What is it? Yorkshire pigs that can digest plant phosphorus better so less of it ends up in their feces. They are can now digest phosphorus more efficiently. The phytase, the enzyme they produce, breaks down the phosphorus with the acids in their stomachs. What’s it’s Purpose? The purpose of enviro-pigs is to reduce phosphorus pollution. Pros & Cons Pro: They release 30 to 65% less phosphorus in their feces. Con: You can’t eat the pigs that are genetically altered.

  3. Biodegradable Products What is it? Products made to be eco-friendly and are able to decompose easily in landfils or on the side of the road. What’s it’s purpose? It is made so that there is less pollution in our landfills. Pros/Cons: Pro: It makes our environment healthier. Con: The products may not decompose in a landfill if they were converted into forms that the microbes and enzymes cannot recognize.

  4. Methane Gas as an Energy Source What is it? It is burned for fuel in either a gas turbine or a steam boiler. Methane produces more heat per unit. What’s it’s purpose? The purpose of using methane for an energy source is to use a gas that is normally bad for the environment, to have a more efficient energy source. Pros/Cons: Pros: Methane fuel produces less carbon dioxide than other hydrocarbon fuels. Cons: Special deli every and storage devices are required for methane fuel because it’s extremely corrosive.

  5. Composting What is it? Mixing different organic things, like dead leaves, so it can be broken down and then be used for soil fertilizer. What’s it’s purpose? To create better and healthier soil. Pros/Cons: Pros: It can be easily done at home, and it can make healthier produce. Cons: If composting occurs in the wrong conditions, it will produce a horrible smell and produces methane.

  6. Plastic Products Made From Corn What is it? Plastic products made from corn have the normal durability of regular plastic items that are made in factories, except when they are thrown away, they decompose. What’s it’s purpose? To make plastic products decomposable and healthier for the environment. Pros/Cons. Pros: These products are eco-friendly. Cons: It will take a very long time to decompose in a bin or at the dump.

  8. Project Addition Where was the product developed/researched? Enviro-pig: At the University of Guelph, in Ontario, Canada (developed) Biodegradable Products: American Society for Testing And Materials (ASTM) (researched) Methane Gas as an Energy Source: Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) are having a discussion about the methane energy. Composting: Pliny the Elder, back in the Roman Empire. He talks about the process in his writings. Plastic Products Made From Corn: Just outside of Blair, Nebraska, corn is being made into plastic.

  9. Questions??? Enviro-pig- What is the purpose of the Enviro-Pig? Biodegradable Products- What's one bad thing about environmental products? Methane Gas- What is it burned in? Composting- What does it create? Corn Plastic- True or false: It is good for the environment.
