  2. Learning objectives • To learn about different types of structures. • To plan and complete a D&T challenge.

Building the tallest and strongest! • When people build the tallest, longest and strongest buildings and structures they need to think about: • What materials to use. • Who will be using the building. • Where the building will be. • What factors may affect it – such as earthquakes and hurricanes.

  4. Did you know? • The longest bridge in the world is the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in China. It is 164 km (103 miles) long. • It would take an average person 27 hours to walk the whole length of the bridge!

  5. Did you know? • The tallest lighthouse in the world is the Marine Tower in Japan. • It is 106 metres (348 feet) high. • A tower of the same height made of Lego bricks would be made up of more than 11,000 bricks!

  6. Build it! • Using the materials provided to your group, can you: • Build the tallest tower? OR • Build the strongest bridge?

  7. How to plan • What do you need to think about before building your structure? • How can you make it strong? • How can you make it steady?

  8. The winning structure • What features made the winning structure the best? • How did the group make their structure the strongest or tallest?
