SATA connections Presented by Daniel Avis
Picture • Connection Comparison
Technology features • High performance Up to 6Gbs transfer rate & Low latency • Made to replace expensive IDE HD connections • Reduced cable size and cost. 7 conductors instead of 40 • Backward and forward compatibility • Users of SATA • Beyond hard disks (HDD), SATA is used in CDs, DVDs, tape devices, high capacity removable devices, SSDs and Blu-ray Drives
Advantages • Less complicated HD connections • SATA cable can be up to 1 meter in length. This allows for more flexibility on where a hard drive can be mounted in a computer case • Faster transfer speeds • SATA is capable of 150/300/600 MBs/second • Support for more drives • There are typically four to six SATA connections on a computer motherboard, allowing for multiple SATA hard drives to be hooked up..
Disadvantages • One SATA connection at a time • Drivers • SATA hard drives will sometimes require a specific driver to be loaded to a computer when installing an operating system, in order for the computer to utilize the SATA hard drive.
Summary Being a HD connection with backwards and forwards capabilities, low cost, faster transfers and being a almost industry standard for good reason .
Recommendations • SATA would be highly recommend for use in a business. With the possibility of better equipment coming in the sata HD will be able to be used(forward compatible) also with existing machines (backwards compatible) • SATA is also being used for a wide range of storage devices thus creating ease of access for a business
