Progesterone Production • Esterified, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol delivered to luteal cells • Luteinizing Hormone binds to membrane LH receptors • LH activates adenylate cyclase which converts ATP to cAMP which activates protein kinases • Protein kinases – accelerate internalization of LDL-cholesterol – remove ester from cholesterol – move cholesterol into mitochondria • Conversion to pregnenolone – leave mitochondria • Conversion to progesterone
Luteolysis • In the early luteal phase progesterone blocks oxytocin receptors in the endometrium – no PGF2a release • Later luteal phase block is removed • Oxytocin produced by large luteal cells stimulates PGF2a release which stimulates release of more oxytocin positive feedback • When pulse frequency and amplitude of PGF2a is sufficient, progesterone production is stopped • CL is destroyed by the process of apoptosis
