  1. Climate Lesson Do Now: Explain the difference between “Weather” and “Climate.

  2. Weather vs Climate? • Weather: Atmospheric conditions (temperature, rainfall, etc…) at a specific point in time (weather can change at any time). • Climate: Atmospheric conditions (temperature, rainfall, etc…) of a region over a long period of time (over the period of a year or longer).

  3. Houston • Weather - Climate

  4. Zones of Latitude • A region’s latitude (distance from the equator) has a direct impact on its climate (closer to the equator = warmer / further from the equator = colder)….usually!

  5. CLIMATE TYPE LATITUDE North Pole 90 N Arctic 66.32 N Temperate 23.5 N Desert Tropical Wet and Dry 0 Tropical Wet Tropical Wet and Dry 23.5 S Desert Temperate 66.32 S Arctic South Pole 90 S

  6. POLAR 60°N 60°N TEMPERATE 30°N 30°N TROPICAL 30°S 30°S TEMPERATE 60°S 60°S POLAR

  7. 1. Which cities will have a temperate climate? 3. Which cities are in the polar zone? 2. Which cities are warm year-round? What is this zone of latitude called?

  8. Topography - Elevation • Elevation = height above sea level • The higher the elevation of a region the cooler the temperature becomes…further • impacting climate! Cooler Temperatures Warmer Temperatures
