100 Years War • Went to France with Edward III army • Skillful soldier • Taken prisoner at Retters • Ransomed by the king and his friend • Latter became the kings page and was pensioned for life
Family • Married Philippa Roet • 3 children (for sure) • Thomas, Elizabeth, Lewis (A Treatise on the Astrolabe)
Midlife • Pursued many occupations: soldier, diplomat, intelligence officer, construction supervisor, controller of customs, and member of parliament • Became bankrupt, sued for debt, friends were executed, charged with rape, ect. • Appointed justice of the peace and pensioned by the king • Produced most of best poetry
Later Life • Wrote Canterbury Tales • Never finished • Where he was mugged twice in the same day by the same people • Was published later by limited edition club • Died on October 25, 1400 in London (murdered?) • Buried in Westminster Abbey (Poets Corner)
