Understanding The System • Social Change in School Reform • Mickey Mouse has become Beavis and Ward Cleaver has become Bart Simpson. • The public today expects students to excel at a faster rate than 50 years ago. These expectations are unrealistic in todays society. • Schools are looked at as a business. The students are the customers. The teachers are mid management and the parents are stock holders. • The problem is creating systems that will sustain changes long enough to reap the benefits that are promised.

Creating Quality Learning Experiences • The engaged student not only does the task assigned but also does the task with enthusiasm and diligence. • Relevance, rigor, and student engagement are paramount in student improvement. • Most middle school students are likely to respond positively to an activity when it provides them the opportunity to work with peers or adults. • The primary task of the teacher as leader and inventor, is to invent work for students that students will find engaging and then to lead them in the conduct of the work that has been created.

  4. WOW Framework • Is a set of ideas that can, if used carefully, help teachers make sense out of what is going on and not going on. • Can be used as a guide for the development of staff development and leadership development programs. • Helps discipline conversations among teachers and among teachers and administrator • Helps teachers think through the lessons they present and the task they assign to students. • Requires teachers to view students as volunteers and customers rather than as neophytes to be inducted into the tribe by powerful adult authorities.

Transformational Leadership • Making changes that will ensure that schools can meet public expectations and become places where most students are successful and all students are more successful than they were • Leaders must attend to structural and cultural change. • Leaders must envision new systems resting on new beliefs that can support these goal. • The change process usually requires more leadership than any one person can provide, no matter how talented that person might be.

  6. In Concluding………… Effective change leaders tend to be relatively secure, self- sufficient persons, capable of getting by with amazingly little external reinforcement for what they do.
