Plant life and Geology • Over millions of years, water, wind and plants have eroded to expose hundreds of different colored rock. • The shape and density effect where water flows, when it rains, and where the plants grow. • Temperatures can vary 50 degrees. Some species can only survive in these extreme conditions. • The animals vary lizards to desert sheep. • These animals have adapted to having little water.
History • People have been coming to Arches National Park for around 10,000 years! Anthropologists have found evidence of microcrystalline quartz knapping fragments of these ancient civilizations. • Roughly 2,000 years ago, nomadic hunters settled in the four corners area. They are known today as the Puebloan and Fremont cultures. • The Puebloan and Fremont Indians became immersed in the agricultural arts by planting domesticated maize, beans and squash. • In the 1840’s, the Spaniards came and explored the west.
