  2. Your Homework Describe your child in a million words or less.

  3. Supplies • 2 Composition Books (100 sheets each) for Eng. & Lit. • 1” Binder (or share a binder with another class) • 2 Dividers • Tape • 2 Highlighters (different colors) • Several page protectors (around 10) • The Usual: paper, pencils, pens • 1 Dry-Erase Marker • A book for pleasure reading (Students should always have a book to read with them in class. It doesn’t matter if it came from home, from the school library, or from my classroom library.)

  4. Grading System • 50% Major Grades (tests, projects, and major writing assignments) • 50% Minor Grades (quiz grades, Weekly HW sheets; class work grades and other homework)

  5. Writing • Short Stories • Book Reviews • Letters • Poetry • School Essays • “Real World” Essays (and Research) • Journalism

  6. Some Novels for Challenge • Gossamer Lois Lowry • The Prince and the Pauper Mark Twain (ISBN: 1-59308-218-5) • Farewell to Manzanar Jeanne W. Houston and J. D. Houston • Tulsa Burning Anna Myers • Twelfth Night (Swan Publishing adapted play version)

  7. Homework • Each Monday, students will write HW in the agenda for the entire week. • Homework will also be posted on my website by Monday evening at the latest.

  8. Weekly Homework Sheet (turned in each Friday for a quiz grade) • Students will have a weekly homework sheet all year with very few exceptions. • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays: Signed reading log: Your signature means that you witnessed your child reading for that period of time. Students should get your signature immediately after the reading session. • Tuesday: Stems words or writing journal • Thursday: Study; spelling practice with signature (only when there is a stems/spelling quiz on Thursday)

  9. Mustang Books • Students will be expected to read one Mustang book each nine weeks. • Students will take an Accelerated Reader test after reading the novel. • Students will receive a test grade each quarter for reading a Mustang Book. • These books are available in the library.

  10. Friday: Quiz/Test Day • Content Quiz or Unit Test: every other Friday • Stems Vocabulary and Spelling Quiz: remaining Fridays

  11. Wish List • Extra rolls of tape • Tissues • Paper towels • Book store gift cards (which will only be used to purchase Mustang books for the classroom library)

  12. On My Website… • Homework, updated weekly • Class handouts (such as the Weekly HW Sheet) for when your child’s copy mysteriously disappears into the abyss of the book bag. • A link to my e-mail • My teaching schedule • Some notes and PowerPoints (such as this one)
