Federal Aviation Administration WJH Technical Center & Rockwell Collins VDL Mode 3 STC Testing 16 & 17 October, 2004 WJH Technical Center Atlantic City
Rockwel Collins and Delta Airlines performed a VDL Mode 3 Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) testing at the WJHTC on October 16th and 17th, 2004. CIE Engineering was part of the engineering support team during testing activities
The test validated the functionality of Very High Frequency (VHF) Digital link Mode 3 (VDL Mode 3) communications equipment. This testing is a significant milestone in the development of digital air-to-ground communications in the National Airspace System (NAS)
The STC flight took place over Atlantic City airspace, radiating in the VHF band using preapproved test frequencies. The majority of the testing was conducted at a flight altitude of 35,000 feet.
The flight test plan required the validation of long range and short range VHF radio capabilities, included intelligible transmission and reception of digital and analog voice communications during long range, high angle and approach communications.
VDL Mode 3 Avionics development is an ongoing effort and will continue through the end of 2005. Business jets avionics testing activities will take place at the WJHTC.
