Update on Sandia’s Portal Project Interlab 2003 November 5–7, 2003 Cara Corey and Tracy Walker Sandia National Laboratories Sandia is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company,for the United States Department of Energy under contract DE-AC04-94AL85000.

Project goals • Build flexibility in information delivery • Develop consistent corporate branding and navigation across the enterprise • Minimize and distribute the maintenance of corporate information • Offer single sign-on access to multiple resources • Establish design and development guidelines and standards • Create a managed content environment • Avoid information overflow — filtering and personalization • Minimize the need for training by making the site more intuitive • Design using web content accessibility guidelines, if possible

Redesign principles • Communities of interest – establish groupings of individuals who have common data/information needs, whether organizational or functional • Right message channels – identify messages and direct them to users using the appropriate channels • Person-centric computing – focus on users and what information they need to perform their jobs • Involving users early – work to mitigate the inevitable resistance that users feel toward change

FY04 Products • Information design for the content of the top two layers of Techweb (Sandia’s intranet site) • User interface design for Techweb—may include several “skins” selectable by the users • Communication plan to address key messages, communica-tions channels and products, activities, implementation plan and timeline, evaluation plan —InfoSessions, help files, FAQs, training, … • Initial identification and development of “Communities of Interest” to create interaction and collaboration among users with common data/information needs • Concurrent planning for redesign of Sandia’s classified intranet • Consideration of multiple channels of delivery — browser, wireless, etc.
