Where did we start? • Spring of 2013 • Math teachers – looking at Math 10C • A visit to Stettler • Sharing with our team – imagine the possibilities • Team visit to Olds • Getting buy-in from students and parents • Drafting a plan
What have we implemented? • Structural changes • Cultural changes • Pedagogical changes
Structural changes • Timetable • 5 blocks and daily flex time • Daily literacy block • Learning Strategies for Grade 10 • Exam prep schedule • Extended learning opportunities • Facilities • Flex room • Décor and key messaging
Cultural Changes • Language and Vital behaviours • What do we, as the adults, need to do differently to create the culture we are after? • Collaborative team and time • Teacher team • Collaborative days built into calendar • A different feel • More relaxed • Special events • Dress code changes
Pedagogical Changes • Teaching practice • Project-based learning – project weeks • Learning styles and strategies • Instructional practices • Assessment • Outcomes-based assessment • Formative vs summative • Mastery
Role of the Teacher • Share ownership of learning with students • Willing to look at their own practice • Open to trying new things • Believing in every student – not accepting anything less than mastery
Role of Administration • Support teachers • Ensure the right people are in the right seats • Instructional leadership • Monitoring progress • Student progress review meetings • Be willing to accept the implementation dip
What have we noticed so far? • Achievement results • Increasing student achievement • Increase in homework completion • Exam prep • Change in the culture of the high school wing • Not ‘us’ versus ‘them’ • Collaborative • Culture of academic achievement and excellence
What is next? • New this year – reading block • Assessing students’ reading levels • Targeted literacy instruction • Looking at TA time • Continued and ongoing reflection • What is working? • What is the data telling us? • Tracking every student
