GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Update): Set-Up #1 • Givens (from the last two meetings) – you have: • Established your “budget”, • Developed and “finalized” your system spec, and • Acquired your components – at least the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and chassis. Preferably, you have also acquired, or have access to, an appropriate video card, power supply, and keyboard.

GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Assemble and Review the Component Docs • Check the motherboard manual or set-up card for: • Jumper and/or DIP switch settings • Power connector locations - as applicable, for the power supply, CPU fan, power supply fan, and system fan • Front panel header location(s) – specifically, check for the power switch header location • Special instructions – CPU and RAM installation • Check the CPU “manual” for the heat sink/fan assembly (HFA) installation instructions.
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Set up the Motherboard • Prepare an open, well lit workplace • Ground yourself before handling the components • Support the motherboard with a non-conductive “interface” material – a thin sheet of high density foam is ideal • As applicable, remove protective “stickers” or “plugs” • As applicable, set jumpers and/or DIP switches (or confirm settings) – CPU detect, FSB speed, system RAM speed, AGP/PCI speeds, and voltages. Initially set to “auto” or “default”.

GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Install the CPU • Lift ZIP socket handle – to the side and then extend up to full upright position • Note CPU pin pattern (orientation) – identify the unique corner(s)/edge(s). • Note the corresponding unique corner(s)/edge(s) in the ZIF socket • Align the CPU pattern to the socket pattern and place the CPU gently into the socket – do NOT force!!! • Seat the CPU – push it down until flush with the socket
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Install the CPU (continued) • Hold the CPU in place with one hand and engage the ZIF socket handle with the other – the handle will “snap” into place • Install the HFA per the instruction sheet – make sure the thermal interface material is properly applied/installed and that all points of HFA engagement are secure • Connect the CPU fan cable to the appropriate power socket on the motherboard – watch the orientation.
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Install the System RAM • “Open” the end clips on the RAM module socket(s) • Note the RAM socket cross brace location(s) • Note the corresponding slots in the RAM module(s) • Align each RAM module to match the RAM socket and insert the module • Using even force along the top edge of the RAM module, push the module fully into place – the end clips will “snap” into place (ensure they are fully engaged) • If applicable, install CRIMMs (RDRAM Continuity RIMMs).
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Bench Test • Elevate the motherboard for video card bracket clearance – the bracket needs to hang over an “edge” • Attach an appropriate video card and connect the video card to an appropriate monitor; turn on the monitor • Attach an appropriate keyboard • Attach an appropriate power supply - check/set the voltage switch; watch the connector keying • Connect the power supply to a grounded power outlet via a good surge suppressor; turn on the surge suppressor and, as applicable, the power supply
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Bench Test (continued) • Bridge the two “power-on/power-switch” pins in the front panel header – the system “should” start up • As applicable, hit the “Del” or “F2” key to enter the BIOS • If you are able to enter the BIOS your bench test was successful – motherboard, CPU and RAM are functional. If there is a problem, retrace your steps. • Disconnect the keyboard, video card, and power supply; remove the video card
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Install the Motherboard/CPU/RAM into the Chassis • Remove the chassis cover, drive bays, and front bezel to provide easy access to component locations • As applicable, insert the chassis I/O shield – you may also need to knock out connector opening cover(s) in the I/O shield • Compare the layout of the mounting holes in the motherboard with the standoffs on the chassis “floor” – add, remove, or relocate the standoffs to match the motherboard layout
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Install the Motherboard/CPU…(continued) • Install the motherboard – watch the chassis I/O shield area to make sure the EMI “fingers” contact the connector housings without blocking the connector openings • Secure the motherboard with the provided screws
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Install the Motherboard/CPU…(continued) • Connect the chassis front panel wires to the motherboard – watch the orientation of the connectors (+/-). Note that there may not be an exact match between available connectors (headers) on the motherboard and the wire set included in the chassis. At minimum you need to connect the power (on/off) switch. If included, also connect the reset switch, power-on LED, and hard drive activity LED – others as you desire.
GSBUG Hardware Info SIG • Your New System (2003 Upd): Set-Up #1 (cont.) • Perform an Initial System Test • Install an appropriate power supply (check/set the voltage switch) and attach it to the motherboard (watch the connector keying) – do not connect to external power • Temporarily install an appropriate video card and connect the video card to an appropriate monitor; turn on the monitor • Attach an appropriate keyboard

If not, remove the motherboard, check installed vs. required standoffs (adjust accordingly), reassemble, and retest until the system starts up. • As applicable, hit the “Del” or “F2” key to enter the BIOS

Slower at same clock. • Core Logic (chipsets) • ALi moves core logic to subsidiary Uli (www.uli.com.tw).

To ship in March. • Matrox announced the Parhelia Precision SGT 256MB PCI video card for high-frequency, grayscale, stereo displays.

PNY introduced the associated card for the US market. • Hard Drives • Hitachi released the Ultrastar 10K300 series – 10K rpm, 2Gb/sec FC and Ultra320 SCSI interfaces, 36-300GB (first SCSI drive available over 200GB), 1075Mb/sec internal transfer (world’s highest).
