Friends / Partners in Aviation Weather Segment 3 Product Generation User Issues Paul Fiduccia October 8, 2008
OverviewActivities / Deliverables - Dates • Status Updates • GFA/GAMET • TAFs • WAAS/RNP Approach Benefits • Wind Shear Warnings • OEP Weather Items • Volcanic Ash • Integrated Product Suites • Convection; TFM Use • Human-In-The-Loop Issues • Criteria for Primary Product; use with others • QC Methods
Status Reports (1/3) • GFA and GAMET: • Status Report • Enhance with cross-section and flight path tool? • TAFs: • Increase TAFs from 530 to 3900. • Improve TAF quality. • Transition to many more “airport-specific” TAFs. • WAAS/RNP Approach Benefits: Forecast / observation / dissemination improvements. • International wx: acquisition & dissemination
Status Reports (2/3) • Wind shear detection systems (especially at lower-tier airports). • Winter weather observation and forecast systems and other information. • Volcanic ash detection on GOES 12. • OEP: Inclusion of user weather req’ts. • Product Suites: Integrated, for each weather phenomena and each user class.
Status Reports (3/3) • Convective Weather: • Improve the utility of CCFP. • Supporting science for low-TRL products for TFM. • Deploy NEXRAD-based systems (WARP, ITWS, CIWS, MIAWS). • Develop and validate probabilistic forecasts to support TFM decisions in uncertainty; in coordination with TFM users and Automation experts to ensure products that will integrate well with DST automation. • FAA and NASA development and integration of DST automation (TFM tools) with weather products?
Human-In-The-LoopForecasting &/or Monitoring • Establish criteria for determining the “primary” product from multiple HIFL and HIML products. • Highest overall utility. • HIML when update rate is too fast for HIFL (shortest-term) • HIML if the models more skill than humans (longest-term). • Develop the principles for the appropriate use of non-primary products as supplemental products, e.g., HIML may still be viewed when HIFL is primary. • When the models are wrong, develop a method of human QC to make corrections or bar low-skill products. • Provide funding / mechanism for a HIML for CIP/FIP.
