“What Teaching Strategies are Teacher Education Faculty Using?” Debra J. Stork EDCI 5870
Summary of findings • Professors perceptions of the teaching strategies used and how often they are used did not correlate well with what was observed. • Professors appeared to be very student centered as evidenced by: • The use of student centered strategies • The high number of non-rhetorical questions asked
Limitations • Small n (n=3) • Too few observations • Observations for too short of a time • Observations were not descriptive or narrative • Lesson plans would have provided additional information • Lack of definition of terms (i.e. teaching strategies and time) • Error in pre-observation survey excluding non-traditional lecture
Significance of study • Teacher Education Professors are using student centered strategies • TE Professors are using a variety of strategies • TE Professors did not show a high degree of self perception, often ranking their use of student centered strategies lower than what was actually observed. • Indicated by their willingness to participate in this study Teacher Education Professors are interested in improving their teaching.
