Islam • Islam means Peace • Revealed religion from Almighty God, Allah - A way of life • Tawheed – Uniqueness of Allah – Creator and Sustainer • Resalat – must believe in all prophets – Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (pbut) • Akhirat – Hereafter • Holy Qur’an- book of God • Hadith – actions, sayings and approvals of Muhammad Orientation Week 2008

  4. Muslims • One who surrenders to the wish of Allah • One who believes and follows Islamic Shariah (law) • About 1/4 of world population are Muslims • Less than 20% Muslims are Arabs • Indonesia is the largest Muslim country • More people showing interest in Islam Orientation Week 2008

Muslims at USQ • Half a dozen in 1993 • Prayed in Chaplaincy • Muslim prayer room 1995 • Islamic Centre in Sept 2000 • Over 250 students on campus, and much more in Sydney and externals • More Arab students now • Growing number of Muslim staff at USQ • Proposed precinct and Building of Islamic Centre Orientation Week 2008

Muslims in Toowoomba • Islamic Society of Toowoomba Inc since 1994 – part of ICQ and AFIC • Growing Community – Afghan, Australia, Bosnia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Iraq, Iran, Oman, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Jordan, Palestine, UAE, • Islami Centre (2000) is open for all Muslims – IST helping USQ students • Engaged with Non-Muslim friends Orientation Week 2008

Muslims in Australia • 17th Century, Makassan traders from Indonesia • Navigators and crews of British Ships (1788) • 1860’s a large number of Afghan cameleers • Oldest mosque in Australia near Maree in SA - Great Mosque of Adelaide build by cameleers • Over 300,000 Muslims (1.5%) in Australia with 35% being born in Australia • Muslims in Australia come from more than 60 ethnic groupings • AFIS in 1963 and AFIC in 1976 • Muslim Reference Group in 2005 Orientation Week 2008

Islam under unfair/unjust attacks • Abrahamic religion – Bible (Old/New Testaments) & Qur’an from the same God, Allah • Women – “protecting friend” “dress” – Hijab is identity, not imposed – 13 Sept at 12noon – why so many western women reverting? • By sword- Killing in battle after saying Shahadah - Spain, India. Oppressed welcome Muslims • Integration- early settlers integrated to indigenous culture- won’t happen overnight – values shared – no need to single out Muslims • Terrorism– a political issue (for both sides)- terrorism has no place in Islam, deal with root causes – double jeopardy for Muslims – Lebanese are not all Muslims - Killing one person – calling names to your mother – Muhammad (s) stand against one who harms non-Muslim – not believer if others are not safe from you Orientation Week 2008

Non-Muslims • Vicegerents of Allah – Spirit of Allah invoked • Muhammad (pbuh) - Jewish servant and writer, a non-Muslim lead his way to Medina • Non-Muslims live in peace and security in Islamic countries over centuries, missionaries, stand against one hurts non-Muslim • Christmas Day Holiday – Churches operating freely • Justice for all – decree of Muhammad (pbuh) against Ali (r) Orientation Week 2008
