3. character motivation • Whatever moves the character to make a change in his life or his thinking. A character’s motivation is the stimulus that causes him or her to react, or be motivated to change.

4. raucous • Loud and harsh sounding noise. The raucous noise from the neighbor’s house kept me awake last night.

5. incredulously • In a way that shows doubt or disbelief. “I cannot believe that happened,” I exclaimed incredulously.

6. venerable • Deserving respect because of age, high position, or other importance. The venerable Judge Daniel was presiding over the court.

7. cynically • In a way that shows mistrust in the motives of others. (Thinking negatively.) The policeman spoke cynically about the criminals ability to be trusted.

8. inference • A logical guess that is made based on facts and one’s own knowledge and experience. The students could make an inference about what kind of people live in this neighborhood by reading the story.

9. renounce • To give up. The day she started first grade she renounced pig tails and never wore her hair that way again.

10. insolently • Boldly and insultingly. He received a detention for being disrespectful when he spoke insolently to the teacher.

11. homonym • Words that have the same spelling and sound but have different meanings. Be careful to use the right, not the rite, homophone or homonym.

12. chiffonier • A high chest of drawers or bureau, often having a mirror on top. He went to the chiffonier to get a pair of pajamas.

13. Hindenburg • In 1936, the German hydrogen-filled, lighter-than-air airship or blimp. The Hindenburg, Nazi Germany's pride and joy, spent one glorious season ferrying passengers across the Atlantic in its luxurious belly. The following year, the airship era screeched to a spectacular halt when the Hindenburg burst into flames while landing in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The disaster claimed the lives of 36 people and received an unprecedented amount of media coverage.

15. gondola • A passenger compartment suspended beneath a balloon or airship. The gondola was located underneath the blimp and was used mostly for observation.

18. century • A 100-year-long period of time. An example of a century is the years 1800-1900.

19. spectacles • Old timey word for eyeglasses. My grandmother put her spectacles on the nightstand.

20. humanitarian • A person who cares about people and who often participates in charity work. A humanitarian,like Clara Barton,does good work to show they care.

21. obstinate • Someone who is extremely stubborn and determined to have their own way. ( adj.) The obstinate man drove during a severe hurricane despite major warnings not to do so.

22. malaria • An infectious disease caused by an infected female anopheles mosquito. Cases of malaria are characterized by cycles of chills, fever, and sweating which may result in death.

23. quinine • A medicine for the purpose of treating malaria. The nurse used quinine to treat her patient for malaria.

24. dapper • neat; trim; smart He looked very dapper in his new suit.

25. unequivocal • Something that is clear and understandable. The unequivocal instructions clearly directed the house-sitter not to have a party while house-sitting.

26. augment • To make larger or stronger, or to become bigger. The balance of his bank account was augmented by the money he inherited from his dad.

28. simile • A comparison where two unlike things are compared using the words like or as. An example of a simile is ”She is as graceful as a swan” or “She is like a swan.”

29. metaphor • A comparison of two unlike things to provide a clearer description. Does not use like or as to make the comparison. An example of a metaphor is calling the dependable father a rock. “He was a rock.”

30. hyperbole • Something that is grossly exaggerated to give it emphasis ( Used a lot to add humor or to persuade). An example of hyperbole is saying you are so hungry you could eat a horse.

31. personification • Giving human characteristics to non-living things or ideas. (noun) An author describing the sun smiling on a field of flowers is an example of personification.

32. idiom • Language or expressions used by a specific group of people. An expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings, such as “kick the bucket” meaning someone has died or “a dime a dozen” meaning very plentiful.

33. allusion • The act of making an indirect reference to something : the act of alluding to something.

34. alliteration • A term meaning two or more words in a row starting with the same sounds. An example of alliteration is to write, “...winds whipping wildly.”
