When characters in a story are speaking, speech marks are put around what they have said. Speech marks are put at the beginning and end of what each person says. For example: Mum yelled, “Clean up your room!”
Underline the words these characters speak. Circle all the speech marks. “I am going to town,’ said David “Can I come too?” asked Emma. “No!” shouted David. Emma whined, “You never let me come with you.” “Alright then, hurry up and get your bike,” said David.
As well as speech marks, direct speech needs other punctuation, such as full stops, commas, exclamation marks and question marks.
Look at the position of the . , ! and ? In the sentences. Circle them “I am going to town,” said David. The comma is put after the speaking, inside the speech marks and a full stop at the end of the complete sentence.
Emma whined, “You never let me come with you.” The comma is put after the speaker and the speaker begins with a capital letter. The full stop is put at the end of the speaking inside the speech marks.
“Can I come too?” asked Emma. “No!” shouted David The question and exclamation marks are put after what is said, inside the speech marks.
Put a . , ! Or ? In the boxes below. The bus driver asked “Where do you want to go ” “It is too wet to play sport ” announced the teacher “What a terrible thing to happen ” exclaimed the man Dr Bennet said “Please see me tomorrow ”
