NORMANS IN IRELAND • The Normans came to Ireland in 1169 on the request of DiarmuidMacMurrough. They came to help him recapture his lands in Leinster. • King Henry II came to Ireland in 1171.He appointed Richard De Clare as king of Leinster.
Norman castles The Normans built their castles in timber before they shipped them to their building site. Their castles were built with a Motte and Bailey. MOTTE BAILEY
Norman warfare • The Normans wore iron armour which covered their bodies and their knees. Their iron helmets covered their cheeks and noses with slits for their eyes. They took swords and shields for weapons.

strongbow Richard De Clare was a famous Norman knight whose skill with a bow gave him the name Strongbow. He was rewarded for his help with the recapture of Leinster by DiarmuidMacMurrough with Leinster’s throne and Diarmuid’s daughter’s hand in marriage.
