  1. Implications of Direct for Physicians Why use Direct? Physicians and the Direct Project • Easy and affordable secure clinical messaging to colleagues and to patients • Each provider has his or her own “NHIN Direct Address,” e.g. DrBurns@NHIN.EastsidePhysicians.com • If you know the Direct Address of any authorized receiver, you can securely send messages+attachments • Vendor-neutral service that is compatible with a broad range of practice-based IT and EHRs • May be used alongside billing systems and EHRs, or integrated into Meaningful Use EHR technology • May be used stand-alone or in conjunction with a Health Information Exchange organization, HIE or HIO • Help your practice meet Meaningful Use incentive criteria for electronic health data exchange • Replace the cost and hassles of faxes and telephone lines for many kinds of clinical messages, e.g. referrals • Won’t force you to “lock in” to a particular vendor or organizational solution for secure messaging • Connect to your colleagues and patients anywhere, anytime, using smart phones and mobile devices • Be part of the future of secure point-to-point and peer-to-peer health data communciations - 1 -

Physicians and the Direct Project • Simple and easy to set up and use • Flexible and extensible: requires only email and Internet connection to start, but works with many EHRs, too • Vendor and operating system neutral, compatible with a broad range of health IT options • Does not require membership in a Health Information Exchange or RHIO • Email client software, e.g. Outlook • Connection to the Internet • Account with a Health Internet Service Provider or HISP, who will help you get your NHIN Direct Address and manage HIPAA level security • If you already use an EHR technology, then be certain your vendor is using the NHIN Direct protocols. • It’s easy! • Get involved! • Look for NHIN Direct pilot projects and participate • Encourage your affiliated health care organizations, e.g. hospitals, to use NHIN Direct • Demand that your EHR technology vendors are NHIN Direct compliant and on the network
