  4. Some SPIRES basics • Over half a million bibliographic records • Searches/Month @ SLAC • Oct 2002: 790,000 • Oct 2003: 885,000 • Oct 2004: 1,117,000 • 5 mirror sites with additional 150,000 searches/month T. Brooks/P. Kreitz

  7. Complete Redesign of SPIRES site • ~100 pages • SLAC SciArts group • Live May 2004 • Still working on CSS and XHTML 1.0 Standards Compliance • Expect to export to mirrors when completed by end of year T. Brooks/P. Kreitz

  9. Seamless Re-sorting • Massive project to allow quicker display of papers in oft-requested descending date order • Challenge to do this without breaking existing links to database • Proof of Principle/Test System • Done “Real Soon Now” T. Brooks/P. Kreitz

  10. Statistics Playground • An area for statistics about the papers in the database • Interesting questions for/from the community • Not meant as absolute gospel • 1,500 hits in its first month T. Brooks/P. Kreitz

  12. Titles and Authors • New methods to allow “synonym” searching in titles • Abbreviations, hyphens, acronyms • Not thesaurus synonyms • Broader subject search combining • Title • Author supplied keywords • DESY supplied keywords • PACS ? T. Brooks/P. Kreitz

  13. Titles and Authors • Authors need better distinction • J. Smith etc is getting too common • Ideas but no working model…yet • Use the HEPNames database to drive a lot of this T. Brooks/P. Kreitz

New* Databases • Jobs • Listing of Jobs of interest to HEP people • Free to posters and searchers • Weeded for closed positions • 20K searches/month (seasonal) • Video • Records of over 2,000 streaming videos of conferences and other talks hosted at many (external) locations *New since last PDG meeting (Jobs:Dec 2002 Video:Feb 2003) T.   16. Experiments DB • Jan 2004 hired part-time Experiments DB maintainer: • Yasuko Weyhrauch • Works with SPIRES at SLAC in other functions • Combination of PDG and SPIRES money paid her through Sept. 2004 T. Brooks/P. Kreitz

Accomplishments • Of the total 2,400 experiments listed, she “touched” over 1,300 • Added 50 new experiments • Scanned laboratory websites like SLAC to update information about experiments • Answered 300 emails from spokespeople, users, etc, relating to experiments information • Numerous other tasks to integrate with other SPIRES DBs T. Brooks/P. Kreitz

  18. Future Plans with PDG • Links to new PDG DB system • Test links already worked • Removed • Will replace when system is ready T. Brooks/P. Kreitz
