What is ergonomics? Ergonomics is the study of how certain products fit the needs and body of people using the products. In school, all students must sit in chairs and use desks to get work done. This PowerPoint is an attempt to try and inform the school board what we have learned from our research on ergonomics.
How does ergonomics Affect the students in School? Sitting in the chairs during school, many people are uncomfortable. This can cause us students to be distracted and often times it causes us to not pay attention during the school day. The factors that often cause us to be uncomfortable is the hard, plastic material used for the back rest and the seat of the chair.
Data found… My group built an ergonome based on average heights, arm sizes and other body parts. We then used this ergonome to test everyday activities. First we sat the ergonome into a chair. We noticed the ergonome’s feet did not touch the floor, being about 8 centimeters off the ground. We also tested our ergonome with a lab table in the back of the classroom. The data collected from that experiment showed that the ergonome needed to bend down in order to touch the top of the table.
What does that data mean? With the data collected from the ergonome sitting in the chair, we learned that in order for the ergonome to touch the floor, the ergonome would need to have longer legs or the chair would have to be shorter. The back of a person is supposed to hit the base of the chair in order to promote good posture. The ergonome would not hit the back of the chair. This data shows that the chair is not properly constructed for good posture. Since the ergonome needed to bend down to touch the table, the data shows that the table is too short. The human using the back table would need to bend down just to write something. Bending down constantly is not good and will lead to back aches.
Is changing the product Worth it? The job of a school is to teach students. This school says its mission is “to meet the academic and developmental needs of students, to encourage responsible citizenship, and to challenge students to strive for personal excellence.” If students are sitting in chairs that give them aches and pains, and they are writing and performing activities using tables that do not promote proper posture, the developmental needs of students are not met. Personally, our group feels if we were provided with better chairs that comfort each persons body, we would be more interested in school and willing to learn.
Downside? We know you are busy looking at the prices of this investment, but just think about how much better students would feel being comfortable in school. Would you rather have hard, uncomfortable chairs that fit your budget but risk negative effects on your student body? Or, would you rather pay a few extra bucks to give the student body decent chairs that will not only help them learn, but promote a healthy body for the future?
