Church Authority • In theory the relationship between church and state was supposed to be a two sided arrangement • The church (pope) was in charge of religious matters
Church Structure • The Church structure consisted of different ranks of religious officials • The pope headed the Church in Rome • For most people local priests served as the main contact with the Church
During an age of warfare the church was a stable force • Religion at this time was center stage to the lives of nearly everyone in Europe
Church Justice • The scope of the Church’s authority was both religious and political • This was a law of the Church on matters such as marriage and religious practices
Church Justice • On larger matters, popes used the threat of excommunication or interdict • Interdict: a prohibition of religious sacraments
Church vs. Kings • Kings began a process called lay investiture • A process in which Kings and nobles appointed church officials
