Right to Know & The Globally Harmonized System The Mass Right to Know law requires: • Information on chemical hazards be given by: • Providing access to Safety Data Sheets (SDS) • Labeling containers of chemicals • Training on chemical hazards and safe work procedures
Safety Data sheets Under GHS all SDS will have the same 16 sections Identification Hazard(s) identification Composition/ information on ingredients First-aid measures Fire-fighting measures Accidental release measures Handling and storage Exposure control/ personal protection Physical and chemical properties Stability and reactivity Toxicological information Ecological information Disposal considerations Transport information Regulatory information Other information
General Lab Safety • No food, drink or applying cosmetics in laboratory or animal areas • Closed shoes must be worn in the laboratory • Follow all policies and procedures for working in the laboratory or Department of Animal Medicine • Know where to find emergency number • If injured report to Employee Health or the Emergency Room IMMEDIATELY
Fire Safety • When you get to your lab find: • Nearest fire extinguisher • Nearest pull station • TWO evacuation routes • Determine your building’s evacuation type: • Full building evacuation • Evacuate floor above and below impacted floor (high rise buildings) • R.A.C.E. can help you to remember how to respond to a fire: Rescue- anyone in immediate danger Alarm- pull and call 911 Confine- close all doors/clear hallways Extinguish/Evacuate- as appropriate and trained
