  12. Daedalus and Icarus Icarus and his father Daedalus Imprisoned by King Minos in the Crete Labyrinth. Wings wax and bird feathers Icarus flew too high in the sky, despite his father’s warning The sun’s heat melted the wax Icarus fell into the Aegean Sea and drowned Daedalus flew lowly and safely across the sea to Italy

  13. King KajKaoos • 1500 BC, King of Persia • Four starving eagles • Light aloe-wood throne • Legs of lamb on spears • The throne raised up and moved forward a short distance before giving up

  14. King Kai Kawus The legend of KajKaoos, the Persian king who was taken aloft on a throne lifted by eagles, was a favorite subject of folklore, as in this 1710 manuscript, in spite of the folly the king represented.

  15. St Michael and the Dragon • The Legend of St Michael slaying the dragon has him winged like an angel • Gives him divine stature and ascribes the ability to fly as a divine skill • Legendary good vs. evil story

  16. Garuda • One of three principal animal deities in the Hindu Mythology • Indonesian Airlines • Garuda is the king of the birds. • Known for his aversion to snakes • Fights evil

  17. Phoenix – The Firebird • A mythical bird • 500 to 1,000 life-cycle • Builds a nest, ignites, and from the ashes a new phoenix arises • It is said that the bird's cry is that of a beautiful song • In very few stories they are able to change into humans.
