Pronunciation: 'mi-kE- Etymology: Modern English map from Medieval Latin mappa, Internet lingo wiki 1 An application designed to allow first responders in a disaster situation to communicate swiftly and effectively with each other about events and their locations through shared editable maps.

Why use a tablet? • Portability • Users are mobile, frequently walking or driving to a new location. • Users are outside away from the traditional desk setting. • Pen Interface • MiKi user may need to be standing when they use the application. A pen is ideal for standing, while a keyboard can be tortuous to use. • Difficult to convey visual information as text

  4. Scenario—Earthquake!!! • Big earthquake hits Seattle • Volunteers arrive from out of town • Communication needed between organizations

  6. Technological Challenges What made MiKi interesting to develop. • Map-space to Latitude/Longitude space conversion (a classic the earth is round maps are flat problem) • Synchronization between users. • Working with Windows Presentation Foundation (WinFX + Avalon)

  7. Developing for Vista • Interact with Ink in a new way.

  8. Future Frontiers • Radial shape for the crossing menu • Reverse geocoding • Route integration • GPS integration
