British Culture in the 1800's • King William IV is king, followed by Queen Victoria, giving the time period the title “The Victorian Era”. • Life was hard in London and people were divided by class. The aristocrats (rich people) and the working class (poor). • People woretop hats, and dresses that were very big. • London is overpopulated due to the revolution. • Some families are forced to live in one bedroom apartments in London.

Living in the Victorian Era Social reforms start to begin for the working class. New themes in society start to emerge: industrialization, science, romantic literature, and politics. Thus, the career of an author starts to flourish.
The Novel: Frankenstein • A common misconception: Frankenstein is not the name of the monster, it is Victor’s last name. (Victor Frankenstein) • The novel was written based off ghost stories heard on a camping trip Mary took. • A gothic novel- combines horror and romance. • Science fiction- the elements of the story could be possible by the laws of nature.
Beginning: Letters 1-4 • The narration begins with Robert Walton writing letters to his sister. • He is traveling on a dangerous path to the north pole on a ship. • He expresses extreme loneliness and disparateness to do something great with his life. • While his ships travels through huge sheets of ice, he finds Victor Frankenstein half dead. • The narrator switches to Frankenstein as he begins to tell his story.
Chapters 1 & 2 • Victor describes his family and how he is from Geneva. • Elizabeth is introduced as an orphan child who grew up as Victor’s companion and best friend. • Henry Clervel is introduced as Victor’s other best friend. • Victor becomes fascinated with the natural world, and how things work.
Chapter 3 “I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation” (p.42). Victor’s mother dies of scarlet fever. He leaves his family to go to a university in Ingolstadt. Victor meets with M. Krempe a professor of natural philosophy to talk about his career. Krempe leaves Victor discouraged when he says Victor wasted his time with alchemy. Victor becomes obsessed with learning more about science.
