  2. Five Sentence Patterns • N-V • N-V-N • N-V-N-N • N-LV-N • N-LV-A

  3. Pattern N-V • This pattern is a sentence with a subject and a verb. The verb is intransitive, meaning that it is an action verb and does not have an object. • Example:She drove to Omaha last Saturday.

  4. Pattern N-V-N • This pattern is a sentence with a subject and a transitive verb. A transitive verb has at least one object that receives the action. In the case of this pattern, the verb has one object – the direct object. • A direct object can be a noun or a pronoun. • Example:The dog ate my homework.

  5. Pattern N-V-N-N • This pattern is also a sentence with a subject and a transitive verb. The difference between this pattern and N-V-N is that this sentence contains a direct object and an indirect object. • An indirect object can be a noun or a pronoun that tells to whom or for whom an action is done. • Example:Jim gave me the autographed football.

  6. Patterns N-LV-N & N-LV-A • These patterns are sentences that have a subject and a linking verb. The linking verb “connects” the subject to the complement (modifier) in the predicate.
