Truman is advised that an invasion of the Japanese mainland would result in over half a million American deaths. • Instead of invading Japan, Truman decides we must drop the Atomic Bomb this will end the war quickly. • September 2, 1945: V-J Day! (Victory in Japan)
The Manhattan Project • A research and development project that led to the creation of the atomic bomb. • Led by the United States, with support from Great Britain and Canada. • This atomic bomb, the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT, can flatten a city, killing tens of thousands of civilians.
The Atomic Bomb • Hiroshima – August 6, 1945 • Bomb called“Little Boy” detonates above the city. • 90,000 deaths immediately, up to 140,000 within months. • Nagasaki – August 9, 1945 • Bomb called “Fat Man” detonates above the city. • 40,000 deaths immediately, up to 70,000 within months.
Staff Sergeant George Caron, the tail gunner, described what he saw: "The mushroom cloud itself was a spectacular sight, a bubbling mass of purple-gray smoke and you could see it had a red core in it and everything was burning inside. . . . It looked like lava or molasses covering a whole city. . . ." The cloud is estimated to have reached a height of 40,000 feet.
