The Veterans: 1922-1945 • Born during the Great Depression and WWII • As adults were able to enjoy single family homes and improved economics • Believe if you work hard and follow the rules you will be rewarded • Responsibility to contribute to work and home life • Value Loyalty, respect authority, and expect rewards for hard work
Baby Boomers: 1945-1960 • Born into economic prosperity and opportunity • Television/ visual international news • Men landed on the moon/ president was shot • Emphasis on freedom and self (Me Generation) • Vietnam war, race riots, women's rights • Idealism/question authority and the status quo • Believe in making a contribution while ensuring a plentiful life for them selves
Generation X: 1960-1980 • More working mothers and single parent households • Learned to manage on their own at an early age • Longstanding close friends become increasingly important • Media/ technology savvy • Space shuttle Challenger disaster • Value short term employment with less permanent relationships • Expect a balance in work and home life • Responsible for consistently updating their skills/ focus is outcomes not processes

Misunderstandings • Shift from hierarchical structure to team based structure at work • For older clients they feel their life's work has earned them respect • Information age and technology have caused younger staff to not be as reliant on senior staff • We can utilize the tecno savvy to help us develop new and improved ways of functioning
Do you remember these? • Split into groups • Try to be in a group that includes a veteran, baby boomer, X-generation and a millennial if possible • Look at your group of pictures • Who remembers what and why? • Write one thing you can do that will make one person from a generation different from your self have a better work environment • Write down one statement from each generation that will help you improve your interaction with a patient.
Getting Along • Do you remember these?
