When the road to results and success can’t be seen, when you don’t know which way to turn or where to take you next step?” What you may be searching for is that light that will illuminate the road to the future”. “Some of you may be asking yourself what is my future at Prism? Where is the future road at Prism going to take me? Will I even be on the bus for the journey along that road? With all of the changes taking place at Prism, sometimes feel like I’m in the dark.”
Room Set Up and Entrance Mark continues: “We have all gathered here this week to explore the road map to GREAT in the future for Prism, and I can be a small piece of the light illuminating the road to results (Mark turns on his lantern) bybeing the caretaker of our culture and leading us to the best performance and the best results, but I can’t illuminate the road to results by myself” • When Mark calls out each leadership team members name they also turn on their lantern: • “Steve Van can illuminate the road to results by setting the vision and establishing the equity partnership to grow the portfolio with strong long term relationships expand the company and provide more opportunities for all of us • “Kevin can illuminate the road to results by maintaining existing and establishing new relationships with clients that will bring us more great deal like this Sheraton that we are meeting in today. • “John can illuminate the road to results by ensuring that our organization is secure and protected from risk.”

Room Set Up and Entrance • Mark continues as the lanterns around the room provide some light: • “Although the corporate team can provide some light around the periphery of our strategy, we still can’t see the road and will never make the journey with out the light of each and everyone of you out in the field” • “please reach under your seats – find your light, turn it on, and lets stand together and as a team illuminate the road to results in 2014. • All attendees stand, the room is lit back up and the PowerPoint presentation with the theme of the conference comes on. Everyone is seated and the remainder of the opening session continues: • Mark – Perspectives and Be Glad to Be Here • Steve – Opening thoughts • Mark and Allison – 4 minute property “What’s your light” presentations • Adjourn to the Opening Vendor Sponsored reception and dinner.
After the light show • As you can now clearly see it will take all of us glowing together to illuminate the road to results in 2014 • 2013 was in many ways a transitional year for Prism, very methodically and very intentionally we have be transforming Prism Hotels and Resorts. We have reduced the number of hotels, mainly in the interim or CMBS side of the portfolio while we have increased the number of rooms under contract particularly in the long term third party management contract side of our business. • We have added some very exciting hotels in 2014 including this Sheraton to the long term side of the ledger. We also recently added the Sage Brush Inn and Suites in Taos New Mexico and the Courtyard by Marriott hotel just down the road from us here in Dallas.
After the light show • We completed extensive renovations at the Holiday Inn Cherry Creek, and are underway with major renovations at the Hilton Baton Rouge and the Hampton and Homewood Suite in Memphis. • While we will never go completely away from the vital CMBS work that we do, we are clearly focusing our efforts, energy and resources on growing the owned and managed side of our business. • To achieve success and continue to grow in 2014 it will be vital that not only your light shines brightly, but that you also inspire every individual in your property to illuminate their own unique and individual points of light in 2014. • There is a difference between a group of individuals working towards a common goal and a team of people each shining their light while simultaneously inspiring others to shine their own personal lights. • The group can only produce additive results 1+1+1 – but the team each day increasing their personal and collective wattage can have a multiplying effect on results – so let’s all honor the greatness that lies with in all of us and shine in 2014 folks!
After the light show • After reviewing the agenda you will notice two things that differ from last years event • First given the feedback that the event was too “rushed” last year we have added a full day to the agenda, included more breaks and more time in the individual break out sessions. • Secondly as a direct result from your requests in the survey – we have added multiple networking sessions. • The purpose of these intentional variations to last years conference is to allow each and everyone of you to get know each other better, to reach out and explore the light, the greatness that each and everyone of you bring to our team, so please bring you engagement and interaction to each and every opportunity. • While we are certainly here to meet and mingle, to celebrate our achievements in 2013, we will only reap the rewards of the investment that you, Prism and your owners have made to make this conference possible if we leverage all of the greatness in this room by reaching out to and leveraging each other once we get back to our individual properties.
Perspective • Now that we are clear on our intent to “BE THE LIGHT” let’s talk about the second of our intentional purposes of this week – “HAVING THE RIGHT PERSPECTIVE.” • While the light can illuminate the road or to results, often there maybe many paths to choose from, some will get you there some may not. Some of the roads to success maybe take you to detours that are not congruent with our core values, some may be more difficult some may be easier. • So how do we choose which road to travel through life – to travel the right road we need to have the proper perspective. Choosing the path to GREAT requires that we use the proper lens when we make the decisions about which road to take. • Having the right perspective allows us to frame up the challenges and the forks in the road that come upon us every day. Our perspective comes from what life experiences we have had in the past and what road we CHOSE to take when confronted with a fork or a challenge. • To illustrate this point I’d like to share with you three stories that have dramatically impacted my perspective in life and how I choose to view the road ahead.
Perspective 1 – “The Jogger” • In 1995 I moved to Las Vegas to operate the first full service Marriott in that city. I enjoyed jogging each day and was determined that I would continue to do so, no matter how hot and dry the climate was. • Each morning I followed the same three mile route around my neighborhood. Most days I encountered the same folks running in that area and as a new comer to the area I decided that I would be the friendly jogger and offer up smiles and good morning greetings to as folks as I could. • Most of the folks I came across would respond by returning my greeting with a waive or a nod, but one particular guy that I saw blatantly refused to even acknowledge me every single day. • The more this guy ignored me the more intent I became at engaging with him but no matter what I did he continued to treat me as if I didn’t exist. • My perspective of this guy started to become shaped by my emotions. Each time he ignored me I got angrier at him, my anger turned from dislike to a bitter resentment of this dude. Each day when I saw him I got angrier and my once pleasant mooring jaunts became almost unbearable.
Perspective 1 – “The Jogger” • After several weeks of this experience eventually became so unpleasant that I stopped jogging all together. • A few months later I friend of mine called and invited me to the dedication of a new park in our sub-division. Work had been going on for almost a year on this park. The funds to create a safe play ground area that adults could enjoy to had been raised by a group of individuals in my neighborhood and my friend was on the committee that headed up the project so I gladly went along with him. • Shortly after I got there and witnessed many children and their families enjoying the new area that had been converted from a former site in the desert that was an eyesore in the community, my friend said to me “hey I want to introduce you to the guy that had the vision to create this park, he’s really the one that put in all the hard work and is a truly inspiring individual. • Well of course wanted to meet this extraordinary person but my friend said, “first I have to warn you this guy is deaf and almost totally blind so it’s a bit hard to communicate with him but come on anyway” • You can imagine the feeling I had in the pit of my stomach when I was introduced to “the jogger” – NEVER judge based on first impressions”
# 2 – September 10th, 2009 • So here is another day I will never forget. My daughter, Delanie Francis had been complaining about not feeling well for a few weeks. She was always thirsty, frequently urinating, always ravenously hungry, eating a ton, but seeming to be losing weight. • My wife scheduled a doctors appointment for her. They left together for the appointment and 30 minutes later my wife called me and told me to pack a bag and meet her at Children's hospital right away. You can imagine how my emotions quickly affected my perspectives about what was important on that afternoon. • Once at the hospital we found out that my daughter had been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, as disease that could be treated, but could never be cured. • My emotions of fear and anger were debilitating. I hated everyone and could not believe the dreadful hand that fate had dealt me. Why her, why me – what had we done to deserve this, she’s only 6 years old for goodness sake. I harbored that fear and anger while I sat in the hospital room for three days. • Finally, I couldn’t bear it any longer and decided to go for a walk around the hallways at Children's Hospital.
# 2 – September 10th, 2009 • After doing my self pity / angry walk for about three minutes my perspective changed in a heart beat when I saw all the other kids there being treated for leukemia, and cancer. Yeah my daughter and my family will have to adapt, but we would survive – some of these kids wouldn’t. • In the following months my perspective was still driven by fear and anger. Fear about the potential long term effects that this disease may have on my daughter but also anger that no one understood what this was all about. • Most people know about adult or type 2 diabetes which often stems from lifestyle choices about diet and exercise, we bring much of type 2 on ourselves, but the kids with type 1 did nothing wrong their pancreas attacked it self and killed the part that produces insulin. • But slowly my daughters attitude that she wasn’t going to let this disease get the best of her, that she was going to do whatever it takes to have a “normal” life inspired me to change my perspective. • I decided that I was going to join the board of JDRF and make a difference.
# 2 – September 10th, 2009 • What’s interesting is how my perspective has changed in 5 plus years since that day in 2009. • You see because this happened to us we have become a stronger family with a unique purpose. We all realize that the chances of curing my daughter are one in a million, but we all work together to find a cure so that no other child has to endure the trials and tribulations. • My daughters condition has brought us closer as a family, we appreciate that while things aren’t perfect, our daughter is still with us what a blessing. • My son has matured as a true guardian angle for my daughter, I think he hawks over her more than my wife and I do at times – who else could say that about siblings at 11 and 14 years old? • My daughter, because of this challenge is the toughest – I’ll kick anyone or anything’s rear end of any 11 year old that I have ever seen. • I have the personal gratification of leading the charge to have raised over 250k to fight this terrible disease and make a difference in so many peoples lives. • Perspective “The worst of time can be come the best of times if you chose to take the path of making a difference rather than being a victim”
# 3 – June 27th, 2013 • In early June I went to see my doctor for my annual physical. She ran all the routine checks and found everything to be fairly decent with standard, “well Mark I’d really like to see you exercise more and drop a few more pounds” but then added those words all males dread “your PSA levels are a bit elevated and I’d like you to see a urologist for some further tests” • I saw a urologist who told me that my prostate had changed shapes and he suggested I get a biopsy which of course I did, and scheduled a follow up visit for June 27th. • On June 27th at 3pm I heard another phrase that was going to dramatically change my perspective on life “unfortunately you have prostate cancer, and it’s an aggressive type of tumor. • Again my hear stopped and fear and anger took over my perspective. But after going through what my family had been through with Delanie, I quickly stopped the self pity victim mentality party and decided to do something about it and take the most aggressive path I could to fight the cancer. • On August 12th I had what is called a radical prostatectomy and had my prostate and several layers of tissue around that area surgically removed.
# 3 – June 27th, 2013 • The wonderful news is that after the surgery the pathology results showed that the tumor had been contained in the organ and had not progressed into any of the surrounding territory – dam was I glad that I had acted fast! While that certainly does not mean that I am cancer free just yet – it is a great sign and greatly increases the survival factor. • For the next two weeks the recovery process was brutal I wont bother you with all the gory details but suffice it to say that it involve a bunch of pain pills and several sets of depends diapers. • My perspective of fear was not completely wiped out particularly when I went to sleep each night, but boy can I tell you I woke up each and every day with a new perspective and that perspective was one of “I’m glad to be here” never before had I enjoyed the simple pleasure of waking up each day as I did over those weeks after surgery and still do each and every day. • Now I still have to go back every couple of months and get blood tests so were not completely out of the woods, but I can tell you each and every day I’m glad to be here and that’s a wonderful way to go thru life. • Perspective – Be glad to be here!
Be Glad to Be Here • I ask each of you to reflect on your level of gratitude to do what we do each and every day. • What is your perspective about our occupations our vocations in life that we have chosen. To me Hospitality is one of the oldest and most noble of all professions. We have the unique opportunity to make such a huge difference in the lives of so many people each and every day. • Do you realize that people come to our hotels each and every day not just to get a good night sleep, or have a hot breakfast or to earn a couple of bucks. No they come to us to have their dreams fulfilled. The come to stay with us to ace that interview for a new job, to meet with a new client and sign that company changing contract, the come to us to get married, the come to us to route on their favorite team or see their child graduate from college. Our owners come to us to see a dream of financial success, to grow their company, to hire more people and grow our economy. Our associates don’t just come to us for a pay check they come to us to care for their families, to create a career for themselves to become something that has a higher purpose.
Be Glad to Be Here • Do you see yourself as someone that is in this industry to calculate CPOR’s, to make your booking goals or as someone that changes the lives of people every day? • When you get that signed contract back do you think of making bonus or about how many meals that will put on the table for your housekeepers? • When that person that complains at the desk raises there voice do you say here we go again – or do you wonder what tremendous pressure they must be under and try and help them achieve their vision? • What other industry could you be in that fulfils the dreams of so many a daily basis, and do you have that perspective. • I’d like to give you just a few examples:
Be Glad to Be Here • Three years ago I visited the Howard Johnson Hotel in Miami. I met with the owners who were visibly shaken and upset with our performance. • I could have made up excuses about how they overpaid for the hotel, they hadn’t put any capital into the hotel blah blah blah. But instead I listened to their story and found out that they had a personal guarantee on the load which meant if the hotel went into default of the loan, which it was about to they could lose their life savings, their car, their kids college fund, and their house. They were literally afraid of living under a bridge. • So I decided to go hire the best GM that I knew and share that perspective with him and let him lose. • No today that hotel is preforming exceptionally well, but more importantly had the performance to be able to refinance the hotel with a new loan that did not have a personal guarantee and now our owner can actually sleep through the night without fear that he could lose everything. • I know that our owners are glad that Albert Elder and his team are here and so am I.
