Situation analysis • Malaria is preventable and curable • Malaria remains a major public health problem in Zambia, despite significant progress made in fighting the disease in the last decade • Incidence reduced from 382/1000 (2016) to 374/1000(2017), however the incidence had increased from 2015 baseline (342/1000). • Severe malaria (in-patient attendance) declined by 37% from 6.9/1,000 in 2015 to 4.4/1,000 population in 2017 • Malaria deaths decreased by 47% from 15.8/100,000 population in 2015 to 8.4 /100,000 in 2017.
National stratification: Malaria outpatient daily attendance per 1000, all ages 2017
Successes • IRS coverage: • 2017 - >1.9Million Structures sprayed (pop. to be protected: 7,800,704) • 2018 - >3.2 Million Structures targeted for sprayed • LLINs coverage: • >10 Million LLINs distributed during2017/2018 mass campaign • >1.6 Million LLINs to be distributed through 2018 ANC/EPI programs • Improvements in diagnostics and treatment (including for severe malaria) • Confirmed malaria cases increased from 50% (2011) to over 85% (2017) • Community engagements (Traditional, Political and Religious Leaders)
Challenges • Inadequate involvement of local partners in malaria elimination activities • Inadequate storage facilities (IRS insecticides & ITNs) at province & district levels • Misuse /abuse/Low use of LLINs / IRS refusals • Inadequate participation in control of breeding sites • Inadequate resources for malaria elimination • ~US$120 million annual budget for malaria / ~US$ 40/ per person / for 5 year period based on 2017 popln estimate
How the FBOs can help to eliminate Malaria • Promote sleeping under treated bed nets every night, throughout the year and during religious gathering • Encourage members & communities to allow their houses to be sprayed, • Be examples: get tested for malaria by CHWs or at nearby Clinic, promote testing and adherence to treatment • Use media opportunities to share malaria prevention messages • Participate in annual Commemorations (World malaria Day, SADC Malaria),
Cont …. • Resources mobilisation for Malaria • Use fellowships to communicate malaria prevention messages (songs and sermons) • Work with other faith based groups to encourage uptake of Malaria prevention and control interventions • Encourage expectant mothers to attend ANC early, take Fansidar every month till delivery • Promote and participate in control of breeding sites
